MohamedSalah, Ph.D.

University Teaching Staff and Research Scientist@Faculty of Veterinary Medicine - Cairo University

Egypt

Dr. Mohamed Salah is an actively working Research Associate Professor on the toxicity of nanomaterials and nanocomposites in vitro and in vivo. Interpreting the toxicological effects of tested nanoparticles through linking between their physicochemical characterization data “As-Prepared /As-Dosed” and the results of their cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity testing. Studying the in vitro Bio-Nano interactions by detection of cellular uptake of tested nanoparticles using TEM and/or spectroscopical methods. Assessing the in vivo toxicity of nanomaterials in rodents through examining their bio-distribution and possible adverse effects in different organs using histopathological and biochemical assays. Dr. Salah was promoted as an Associate Professor at the Department of Veterinary Toxicology and Forensic Medicine for his publications in the fields of animal species identification and genetic forensics using molecular biology techniques. Since 2010, Dr. Salah is intensively focusing on the safety assurance and toxicity testing of Engineered Nanomaterials (ENMs) in vitro and in vivo on mammals and the environment using OECD International guidelines. Dr. Salah completed his doctoral thesis in the laboratory of Dr. Felix Althaus; the University of Zurich, Switzerland (2003), in the fields of signal transduction, apoptosis, and tumor suppression pathways under genotoxic stresses. His research revealed the involvement of Poly (ADP-ribose) Polymerase-1 (PARP-1) in the stability of tumor suppressor p53 protein upon DNA damage. Such research work exposed Dr. Salah to multidisciplinary experiences in the fields of cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics. After getting his doctoral thesis, he was enrolled as a postdoctoral fellow in a running project towards the production of a genetically engineered prototype vaccine against Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis by targeting its exotoxin phospholipase D (PLD) protein. Dr. Salah shared the direct submission of the full genome sequence of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis isolated from Egyptian buffalo into the database of NCBI GeneBank in cooperation with a large team of research scientists from different Brazilian Federal Universities. Dr. Salah holds a bachelor in Veterinary Medicine (1993) and a master's degree in toxicology (1997) from the Veterinary College, Cairo University, Egypt.
