Elementary Academic Coach

Teaching & Learning Guidelines for Staffing

Purpose

The Elementary Academic Coach primarily supports students and classroom teachers in grades kindergarten through second grade, but may also serve other grade levels after K-2 student needs are met. The Academic Coach provides students with supplemental targeted support matched to student needs in reading. The Academic Coach also provides professional development and training for all teachers in culturally responsive teaching strategies and resources. The Academic Coach also helps guide the teacher through the formal intervention process to ensure a student has been provided with appropriate interventions and corresponding data has been collected to confirm that a student has been provided sufficient opportunity to make growth prior to being referred for special education services.

Nature & Scope

The Academic Coach

  • Provides culturally responsive, targeted individual and small group instruction for students performing below grade level in reading and/or not meeting proficiency standards. Support may be via either pull out or push in.
  • Prepares lessons, provides professional development and training and guides building paraeducators so that they can provide instruction to students.
  • Provides professional development and support to classroom teachers in the areas of reading intervention, which includes students diagnosed with or identified with the characteristics of dyslexia.
  • Collaborates with the classroom teacher and partners to create and review student growth plans and monitor their progress by reviewing classroom and intervention data.
  • Serves as the dyslexia specialist in the building and is responsible for supporting all K-5 students identified as having dyslexia or the characteristics of dyslexia. This may be through individual or small group work or by providing the classroom teacher with specific supports and resources.
  • Coaches and leads professional development for classroom teachers in the areas of dyslexia, reading strategies, and other intervention support.
  • Provides the classroom teachers with the skills necessary to support students who have reading challenges.
  • Works with the school administrator(s) to build an intervention plan that is woven into the instructional core, to aid in closing achievement gaps, and preparing all students to meet proficiency levels.
  • Supports and leads building-led teams as they review student data and makes recommendations regarding next steps in intervention. This position also reviews the core standards and reviews these standards with the classroom teacher to ensure that the classroom core is implemented.
  • Supports and guides classroom teachers through the special education referral process.
  • Collaborates with Teaching and Learning, TOSAs, and peers to develop and implement effective student interventions, ensuring instruction is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the District.
  • Participates in the curriculum development and adoption process at both the building and District levels to ensure curricula include a full range of interventions necessary to meet District content standards and support student achievement.
  • Plans and implements school and District professional development opportunities, focusing on culturally responsive practices.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with District and school personnel and community members, including those from diverse cultures or backgrounds or those who speak limited or no English.
  • Complies with all procedures outlined in the Code of Professional Conduct and Annual Notices for Education Practitioners, Teachers, Support Staff, Administrators, Substitutes Handbook and the Beaverton School District Transportation Employees Handbook; and all other Beaverton School District Policies and Procedures.

Note: The Academic Coach primarily supports students as they acquire reading proficiency. This role may evolve to support other academic areas in the future as our Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) is developed and intervention strategies and protocols are developed. Training and support would be provided prior to implementation. Definition for use in this Job Description:

Intervention” is defined as research-based intensive or targeted instruction matched to student need.

“Dyslexia” is defined as a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge. - International Dyslexia Association.

In BSD students we identified students with the characteristics of dyslexia via our easyCBM in Kindergarten and all new incoming first-grade students.

Reports to : School Administrator Supported by: Teaching & Learning and Special Education TOSAs Other Considerations for Hiring/Placement:

This position will be engaging in a two-year LETRS training program. This training will be approximately 3 hours per week and will be completed during the work week.

This position needs to collaborate well with teachers and also needs to communicate with families.

Licensing/Special Requirements:

  • Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid elementary Oregon teaching certificate,reading endorsement preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience teaching literacy in the elementary grades.
  • Trained to administer reading assessments.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of intellectual and emotional needs of students at appropriate grade levels and ability to communicate effectively with those age groups.
  • Expertise in teaching and applying standards-based learning.
  • Knowledge of and ability to coordinate student intervention, data, and learning team processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, collaborate, and facilitate professional development.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills with teachers, administrators, and parents.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Meets and maintains punctuality and attendance expectations.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with applicable Board policies and District and legal requirements.
