Job Description

Overview

Develop skills in energy modeling and gain a solid understanding of power systems, market operations, and grid planning. The role involves applying analytical tools to evaluate real-world electricity system issues and working with modeling frameworks and data-driven analyses across North American and Indian power markets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Model Development and Execution
  • Support the development of production cost models using tools such as PROMOD, PLEXOS, PyPSA, or GridPath, with application across North American power markets as well as similar studies in India.
  • Assist in preparing model inputs, validating assumptions, and interpreting simulation results in coordination with the modeling team.
  • Contribute to process automation and workflow improvement using Python and data science techniques.
  • Data Collection, Validation, and Analysis
  • Collect, clean, and organize large datasets related to generation, transmission, load, renewable energy, fuel prices, etc.
  • Perform validation and consistency checks to ensure the quality and reliability of modeling inputs in coordination with the team members.
  • Apply machine learning and statistical analysis to identify trends, correlations, and anomalies relevant to modeling and electricity price forecasting tasks.
  • Database Management
  • Assist in developing and maintaining comprehensive databases of generating resources, load forecasts, renewable profiles, transmission assets, and other key market parameters.
  • Regularly update datasets using public sources (e.g., ISO/RTO reports, EIA, CEA, CERC, etc.) and project-specific data inputs.
  • Market Research
  • Assist in conducting market research to extract key insights that inform modeling assumptions.
  • Assist in reviewing and summarizing ISO/RTO filings, regulatory documents, and technical literature relevant to power systems and market operations, and coordinate with cross-functional teams to incorporate relevant findings into analytical workflows.
  • Analytical Support and Reporting
  • Develop data visualizations, summary tables, and clear analytical outputs for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Document methodologies and maintain reproducible analytical workflows.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred focus: Power/Energy Systems, Applied Math, or Economics) with 0–2 years’ experience in power system modeling, energy analytics, or related quantitative fields.
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Python (Pandas, NumPy) and Excel.
  • Experience in data cleaning, validation, and database maintenance for power system or market datasets.
  • Detail-oriented with ability to manage large technical datasets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work 1:00 pm–9:00 pm IST to collaborate with US teams.
  • Familiarity with production cost or power system simulation tools (PROMOD, PyPSA, PLEXOS, GridPath) is prefered.
  • Knowledge of energy storage, renewables, and RTO/ISO markets (PJM, ERCOT, MISO, CAISO) is preferable.
  • Experience with visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, Plotly) and statistical frameworks (Scikit-learn, Statsmodels) will be added advantage.
  • Exposure to SQL or other database systems is plus.
  • Interest in automated data pipelines and model interface development.

Note: This position focuses on energy modeling and power system analytics. Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in power systems, electricity markets, and grid planning. While data science and programming skills are important to support analytical workflows, this is not a pure data science or AI/ML role. Applicants whose primary interests lie in general data science, AI, or machine learning may find the position less aligned with their career goals.
