The Appeal Tribunal (AT) is a bureau within the Unemployment Insurance Division of the Department of Workforce Solutions. The AT conducts telephonic appeal hearings in matters related to the administration of unemployment benefits when an aggrieved party files an appeal.
Interviews will be conducted within two weeks of closing posting date.
Why does the job exist?
The Legal Assistant position will administratively support the Hearing Officers by managing incoming appeals via US mail, email and an internal queue. They will communicate with the parties via phone to check in participants, answer questions and take appeals. The Legal Assistant will coordinate with the judges to ensure correspondence is in the appeal case files and all parties have the information necessary to meaningfully participate in the appeal process.
How does it get done?
The Legal Assistant position will be primarily responsible for answering phones, filing appeals, managing incoming correspondence and providing assistance to the Hearing Officers regarding scheduling, submitting evidence into the appeal case files, and managing incoming correspondence.

The job supports both internal and external customers to include employers, claimants, representatives and other DWS staff as well as to provide assistance to the Hearing Officers and the Office of General Counsel.

Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or equivalent and six (6) months of directly related clerical, secretarial, and/or office administration experience utilizing legal terminology, procedures, and documents. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) months may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work performed in the TIWA building, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The office setting will require extensive use of a computer and phone and will require long periods of sitting and may required light lifting.
