About the Department

Seattle Pacific University’s Mathematics and Data Science Program is housed in the Technology Division of the College of Business and Technology . Our faculty view mathematics as a holistic endeavor—logical, beautiful, and useful—for majors and for the many students and departments we serve. We are called to teaching excellence, demonstrating mathematics and statistics as languages students can use to understand and model the world. We nurture students from a wide range of backgrounds, uplifting those from underrepresented groups, and we share expertise with the community through research, service, leadership, and individualized care.

The Technology Division offers a B.S. in Data Science and minors in Mathematics and Data Analytics. Mathematics faculty serve programs in science and engineering and contribute to the University’s general education curriculum.

What We Need

Seattle Pacific University seeks applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics or Data Science in the College of Business and Technology, beginning September 1, 2026, with a possibility of moving to tenure-track in the future.

Exceptional candidates with outstanding qualifications and experience may be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.

The teaching load is approximately 33 quarter credits per academic year, primarily undergraduate courses in mathematics, statistics, data science, and computer science, with advising of undergraduates and supervision of undergraduate research projects. Faculty are expected to establish and maintain a program of research/scholarship and to participate actively in the life of the program, division, college, and university.

What You’ll Do

  • Teach undergraduate courses in mathematics, statistics, data science, and/or computer science.
  • Advise students in academic progress, vocational discernment, and career pathways.
  • Maintain an active research and/or creative agenda, presenting and publishing as appropriate.
  • Participate in departmental, divisional, college, and university service.

What You Bring

Required:

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or a closely related field (ABD considered).
  • Strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate education.
  • Versatility to teach introductory courses across multiple areas of mathematics, statistics, data science, and computer science, and expertise to teach advanced undergraduate courses in at least one of these areas.
  • Mission Alignment: A personal commitment to Christian faith; enthusiasm for supporting SPU’s mission; alignment with the University’s Statement of Faith ; and willingness to uphold the lifestyle standards of our Christian community.

Preferred:

  • Specialization in data science or statistics.
  • Expertise in issues of ethics in data science.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and equity-related issues.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation: Assistant level salary starts at $76,500, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and assigned rank.

Faculty salaries at Seattle Pacific University are based on nationally-normed, regionally-adjusted CUPA-HR data and determined by education and relevant experience.
