Associate Counsel

The New York State Senate is seeking applicants to fill the position of Associate Counsel for the Senate Majority Counsel and Program Office. The position of Associate Counsel is responsible for performing the following duties:

• Providing legal, policy and budget analysis, and central staff support for the Senate Majority Conference on matters referred to one or several other committees
• Tracking related legislation active in the state Senate, Assembly, and occasionally, federal or local legislation and administrative activity
• Making oral presentations on relevant bills under consideration by the state Legislature
• Drafting memoranda analyzing policy initiatives and state legislation
• Assisting the Conference in negotiations
• Preparing briefing materials for members of the Conference on legal and policy issues
• Assisting Senators in preparation for public hearings, roundtable discussions, forums, and other public meetings and events
• Meeting with relevant advocacy and constituency groups.

To move forward, you must have:

• Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree
• Strong writing and oratory skills

All candidates are expected to live and work in the Capital Region of New York.

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated legislative experience. Candidates who possess similar relevant experience and/or educational achievement may be alternatively considered for the title of Policy Advisor on a case-by-case basis.

Salary is $75,000, commensurate with experience.
