Job Title: Middle School Band Director (Grades 6–8)

Position Summary

New York Edge is seeking an enthusiastic and highly skilled Middle School Band Director to lead our instrumental music program for grades 6–8. The ideal candidate will be capable of teaching all band instruments and fostering a lifelong love of music through engaging instruction, creative performance opportunities, and a positive, inclusive classroom environment.

The Band Director will direct concert, jazz, and pep ensembles, collaborate with other fine arts staff, and build a strong foundation of musicianship that prepares students for success in high school band programs.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach and develop student skills on woodwind, brass, stringed, and percussion instruments across all ability levels.
• Direct and rehearse concert band, jazz band, and small ensemble groups.
• Plan, organize, and conduct school and community performances.
• Develop and implement music curriculum aligned with state and district standards.
• Maintain and organize instrument inventory, sheet music library, and equipment.
• Create a classroom environment that encourages participation, creativity, and discipline.
• Collaborate with colleagues in the fine arts and general education departments to support interdisciplinary learning.
• Participate in professional development and contribute to the growth of the school’s arts program.

Qualifications

• Proficiency in all major band instruments (woodwinds, brass, percussion).
• Experience conducting middle school or secondary ensembles.
• Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills.
• Ability to inspire, motivate, and connect with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.

Preferred Skills and Attributes

• Experience with marching or pep band leadership.
• Ability to arrange or adapt music for mixed-ability groups.
• Familiarity with music technology (SmartMusic, Finale, or similar).
• Passion for building a sustainable and inclusive music program.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
