The CAD Designer is responsible for creating, developing, and improving detailed 2D and 3D mechanical designs for Merrell Bros. equipment and systems—such as biosolids processing equipment, belt presses, vacuum rollers, conveyors, pellet mills, piping systems, platforms, and full plant layouts. The role supports engineering, manufacturing, R&D, field operations, and procurement by producing accurate engineering drawings, models, BOMs, and documentation. The goal is to ensure Merrell Bros. products are delivered "On Specification, On Time, and On Cost."
- Create detailed 3D models and 2D engineering drawings using CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred).
- Develop layouts, assemblies, and fabrication drawings for mechanical equipment.
- Generate BOMs, cut lists, and manufacturing packages.
- Support engineers in developing new products and refining existing systems.
- Convert design concepts into manufacturable models and drawings.
- Prepare prototype models, design sketches, and renderings.
- Participate in internal design reviews and incorporate feedback.
- Work with Engineering, R&D, Manufacturing, Project Management, Quality, and Sales.
- Provide technical drawings and documentation to field teams and customers.
- Collaborate with vendors and suppliers for outsourced components.
- Manage multiple design projects and prioritize based on deadlines.
- Ensure drawings meet Merrell Bros. standards for clarity, accuracy, and manufacturability.
- Maintain revision control and participate in Engineering Change Notice (ECN) processes.
- Ensure compliance with mechanical design and safety requirements.
- Use design tools and templates to improve efficiency.
- Identify opportunities to improve manufacturability and reduce cost.
- 7+ years of CAD design experience in mechanical or industrial equipment.
- Strong proficiency with SolidWorks including weldments, sheet metal, and assemblies.
- Experience designing with stainless steel, mild steel, plastics, and fabrication tolerances.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes (welding, machining, forming, assembly).
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects.
- Ability to read and produce engineering drawings to industry standards.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a hands-on, practical mindset.
- Experience in PDM or similar system.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, CAD/Design Technology, or similar.
- SolidWorks certification (CSWA/CSWP) preferred.
- Six Sigma or process improvement training beneficial.
- Extended computer work.
- Ability to inspect detailed drawings and models.
- Occasional movement through shop and warehouse areas.
- Requires clear communication and listening skills.
- Fast-paced, shifting-priority engineering environment.
- Office-based with frequent visits to shop, warehouse, and production areas.
- Exposure to noise, dust, and temperature changes (PPE required).
