Terran Orbital is seeking an experienced Chief Engineer - Operations to join our growing team. Reporting to the VP of Assembly, Integration & Test (AI&T), the Chief Engineer - Operations will play a pivotal role in developing strategic and tactical responses to implement company business goals; provide leadership to the program managers; manage strategic and complex programs through the coordination of people, logistics and material; execute contractual responsibilities in a profitable manner; develop systems to improve productivity and uniformity across portfolio programs. The Chief Engineer will be responsible for identifying and implementing robotic augmented reality solutions for manufacturing automation, which will require working with all stakeholders in the Technology, Operations and Engineering organizations. The candidate will be responsible for the full life cycle of automation, from identification of processes to be automated, sizing the infrastructure, selecting robots, selecting test systems, and establishing augmented reality infrastructure. The position requires implementation of solutions in the factory, from initial prototype to final operational systems, and monitoring effectiveness and making improvements over the manufacturing life cycle.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the Manufacturing and Engineering Senior leadership to identify opportunities for process automation in our manufacturing of satellites.
  • Work with the SVP Programs to size the infrastructure needed to meet program needs
  • Develop robotic process automation (RPA) system architectures to implement automated manufacturing.
  • Develop test system architectures to implement automated module, unit and system testing.
  • Work with engineering teams to develop and streamline manufacturing workflows
  • Work with major equipment suppliers in the selection and development of test and manufacturing equipment.
  • Work with software suppliers to develop databases of factory solutions (RPAs and test systems), and select architectures for implementation
  • Implement prototype solutions robotic hardware and perform simulated manufacturing processes with mockups in the factory.
  • Implement final manufacturing solutions, and refine over production life cycles
  • Implement automated test solutions, and refine over production life cycles
  • Help build and lead a team of RPA controls engineers, test system engineers, software engineers, and manufacturing engineers
  • Implement augmented reality solutions for manufacturing and training

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Mechatronics with a focus on control systems, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, in particular in manufacturing RPA applications, AR systems, test system applications, and factory industrialization
  • Strong background in automation systems, robotics, embedded systems, sensors, and simulation.
  • Work experience in implementing automation in real-world manufacturing application.
  • Self-motivated and able to work quickly and effectively starting with only high-level objectives
  • Ability to interface effectively with the Technology, Engineering and Operations organizations to develop detailed requirements and solutions for automation
  • High attention to detail; ability to preempt design/manufacturing/procurement issues.

Physical Demands

The job operates in a professional office environment but in a manufacturing company. This job routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and scanners.
