Value Proposition

Through our work at St. Charles, we are able to shape a community while bringing meaning and purpose to our own life. At the heart of our work is service to others, ensuring the health, safety, and connection of those who live, work, and visit St. Charles. Our important work is recognized through above-market compensation and a rich benefit package.

Description

Develop your engineering career with a team that invests in you! Seeking a motivated, team-oriented engineer who is excited to learn, grow, and make an impact in the community. We offer hands-on experience with a variety of municipal engineering projects, mentorship, and a supportive environment that values professional development. You’ll join a team of dedicated professionals who take pride in meaningful work, improving public infrastructure, enhancing neighborhoods, and serving our residents.

Examples of Duties

In this role, you’ll apply your engineering knowledge to support and lead components of public works projects from start to finish. You will:

  • Assist with construction oversight and field inspection for municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Work closely with contractors, residents, regulatory agencies, developers, and City staff to keep projects running smoothly.
  • Prepare engineering plans, specifications, and contracts with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Support the management of the City’s National Floodplain Insurance Program and National Pollution Discharge Elimination System Permit Program.
  • Provide excellent customer service, helping answer questions related to planning, floodplain elevations, construction, and development.
  • Grow your project management and technical skills while learning from experienced mentors.

Qualifications

If you’re early in your career and eager to learn, this role is a great fit. Ideal candidates have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or construction engineering.
  • Two years of experience in civil engineering or construction inspection (internships and co-ops count!).
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Familiarity with engineering principles, codes, and regulations (knowledge of IDOT, KDOT, MFT, and IEPA processes is a plus—not a requirement on day one).
  • Clear communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience with MS Office, GIS, and MicroStation or AutoCAD.
  • EIT certification preferred or willingness to obtain within two years.
  • IDOT Documentation certification preferred (or obtain within 18 months).
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • If selected, successful completion of a background check (including fingerprinting), physical, functional capacity evaluation and drug screen will be required.

Supplemental Information

Starting pay based on experience. Robust benefits package medical, dental, vision, wellness incentives, life insurance, pension through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, and additional retirement savings options.
