The Town of Snowmass Village is looking to hire a Communications Specialist to join our Town Manager's Office!

This is a hybrid position, scheduled to begin on or after January 1, 2026

$1,000 sign-on bonus available!

We are looking for a Communications Specialist that will manage, supervise, and coordinate activities and operations in support of the Town's communications plan and community engagement strategies including the development of effective messaging and communication strategies; disseminate information on Town policies and initiatives to the public; manage media interaction and coverage, oversee website content and navigation and social media platforms; create materials for special events and implement logistics; create Town branded presentation materials; maintain Town functions related to public information and community relations; coordinate assigned activities with other Town departments, divisions, and outside agencies; and provide communications counsel to the Assistant Town Manager.

Some of the day-to-day duties are listed below:

  • Coordinate, establish and maintain two-way communication between assigned department, staff and its various external and internal customers; provide strategic leadership in media relations and crisis communications in addition to communications advice and counsel to department leadership and personnel.
  • Serve as a liaison between Town Manager's Office and members of the media; assist in coordinating communication during emergency and non-emergency events; handle media requests and manage media access; schedule interviews with press regarding Town issues and activities.
  • Manage the Town's websites and portals to ensure users receive consistent, current, accurate, and engaging content; collaborate with Town staff to create and maintain web content on the Town's public and employee websites; conduct quality assurance checks and content audits to verify accuracy, standardization, functionality and compliance with ADA accessibility; troubleshoot website issues; test website appearance and functionality in multiple browsers and platforms.
  • Identify and select appropriate products, packages and vendors to meet current and future communication needs; make recommendations to stakeholders on the appropriate use of advanced web technologies, tools and techniques; assist in the selection, purchase, and installation of web page creation and publishing software.
  • Coordinate and participate in public meetings and open house programs to promote Town services and to provide a better understanding of the organization; provide public education and information; create and implement programs, citizen outreach activities and special events; work with Town staff across multiple departments to identify and develop solutions for engagement needs.
  • Develop and oversee community engagement programing; develop strategies to enhance information flow between Town staff and community members; in collaboration with Town staff create and implement promotional plans for new projects and programs; participate on committees working to resolve community issues
  • Prepare written material to include blog and social media posts, press releases, newsletters, presentations and public service announcements; take photographs of various events and occasions; oversee writing, design and printing functions.
  • Monitor, interact, and respond to citizen interactions on the Town's website and social media channels to cultivate engagement; monitor social media keywords and hashtags to detect trends in the community; develop networks and relationships with various media outlets to maximize positive public relations and communications; maintain collaborative relationships with representatives of the community, citizens, and employee and public interest groups; develop and maintain information on the assigned intranet and internet web sites attend regularly scheduled public information officer meetings; anticipate negative news coverage and plan accordingly.
  • Work closely with Town departments to ensure accuracy and consistent design standards; assist in communication of strategies or messages from senior leadership; participate in brainstorming and planning sessions; research, develop and advocate best practices; establish content requirements and maintain templates to ensure consistent design standards.
  • Review analytics across all social, print, and broadcast media and translate data into recommended plans to revise Town strategic communications plans; lead survey initiatives and analyze public opinion; implement actionable insights.
  • Anticipate and respond to questions and concerns from the public regarding programs, services, issues and work plans; provide information as requested.
  • Work with staff in other Town departments and outside agencies to prepare communications and promotional items for specific projects.
  • Gather information and prepare a variety of reports and records; maintain logs and records of activities and events.

The ideal candidate has the following qualifications/skills:

  • Minimum Qualifications: Five (5) years of increasingly responsible media relations, public relations or journalism experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public relations, communications, journalism, public administration or a related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Knowledge of: Operations, services and activities of municipal government services, organization, and general political structure. Principles and practices of public relations, community involvement and marketing strategies. Social and economic conditions, cultures, dynamics, and issues associated with living and working in diverse communities. Principles and practices of cultural diversity and inclusion. Principles and practices of community engagement/public participation. Public outreach, resident response, and neighborhood development and program planning principles, practices, current issues, and trends. Customer service principles and problem resolution techniques. Principles and practices of project management. Principles and applications of graphic design and layout. Methods and techniques of effective technical report preparation and presentation. Effective public speaking and presentation techniques. English usage, spelling grammar and punctuation. Modern office technology and equipment, including computers and related software applications. Principles and practices of budget preparation and administration. Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation. Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Ability to: Supervise, plan and direct a public information and communication relations program. Select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff. Participate in the development and administration of division goals, objectives, and procedures. Organize and manage multiple projects and deadlines. Write and/or edit written materials for publication. Identify opportunities to publicize Town programs. Present technical data, in verbal, written, graphic and map form to a variety of audiences. Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals. Respond to requests and inquiries from the public and Town employees. Operate and use modern office equipment including computers and various software applications. Interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, laws, and regulations. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Speak, read, comprehend, and write the English language fluently.
