Job Title: Court Advocate
Job Summary:
The Education, Career, and Enrichment (ECE) department at CASES specializes in serving youth and young adults impacted by the criminal legal system. The Assertive Community Engagement & Success (ACES) program seeks a Court Advocate who can appear in court with participants who have active court involvement, develop relationships with court stakeholders, and write court advocacy letters on behalf of engaged participants.
The young people ACES serves will be engaged in high-risk behaviors. ACES serves young men ages 16-24 who reside in East Harlem and the South Bronx.
By developing long-term, multi-year relationships with young people, CASES will meet the young people where they are (literally, with extensive services in the community) to open new opportunities. The safety of our participants and staff is paramount as we continue to see our work make an impact and grow.
This position requires flexibility as court dates, call times and locations vary. In-person court appearances are expected.
Shift Hours: This position is full-time Monday – Friday from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Salary: The salary for this role is $61,800 per year
Location Address: Varies – Court offices and ACES program locations
Workplace Flexibility: Flexible – Staff have the flexibility to complete their workday from home or another suitable space, typically after reporting to the office and/or engaging in field or community-based work.
What You Will Be Doing:
    • Compose all formal correspondence with the courts including advocacy letters and other updates
    • Develop and maintain relationships with court stakeholders which includes regular presentations to stakeholders including but not limited to judges, defense attorneys, prosecutors and probation officers
    • Accompany participants to court appearances and be prepared to speak on record on behalf of participants and their engagement with the ACES program
    • Participate in programming where appropriate – running groups for participants explaining the criminal legal system
    • Collect and record data (re-arrests, warrants, program noncompliance, etc.) and track participants’ cases until final disposition
What We Are Looking For:
    • Experience within the criminal legal system, and/or experience working with youth & young adults impacted by the criminal legal system
    • Confidence in public speaking with the ability to quickly pivot when needed
    • Excellent analytical, verbal and written communication skills
    • Proven ability to function effectively in a high paced environment
    • Ability to work productively amongst others in a diverse setting
    • Understanding and knowledge about challenges youth and families involved in the criminal legal system confront
    • Positive attitude and excellent problem-solving skills
    • Highly resourceful
Preferred Skills:
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred, but not required
