Crew Worker I

JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of this classification is to perform manual and entry-level work as part of a crew engaged in maintenance and upkeep of public parks, grounds, facilities, streets, and/or infrastructure. Work is physical in nature and under the direct supervision of a Crew Supervisor or Leader.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs manual work within an assigned department, which may involve grounds maintenance, parks maintenance, street maintenance, sanitation services, facility maintenance, or other projects within the assigned department; assists equipment operators, skilled-trade employees, or other workers as needed.

  • Performs various tasks involving roadside maintenance, grounds maintenance, or landscaping projects: mows grass; trims and edges along roadways, landscaped areas, driveways, sidewalks, and fence lines; plants and maintains trees, shrubs, and flowers; weeds flower beds; cuts down trees; prunes tree limbs, hedges, and shrubs; picks up and disposes of tree limbs, brush, and other materials; spreads seed, mulch, and other grounds materials; tills or aerates soil; moves dirt and grades land; installs sod; applies fertilizer and herbicide; rakes; blows leaves and debris; empties trash containers; digs holes and trenches; and shovels materials.

  • Performs tasks involving maintenance of parks, athletic fields, and recreational facilities: cleans and maintains athletic fields, bleachers, and related facilities; drags ball fields; applies lines and markings; maintains courts, playgrounds, trails, and associated equipment.

  • Performs tasks involving street, stormwater drainage, and/or right-of-way maintenance: prepares road surfaces for asphalt application; lays and smooths asphalt; patches utility cuts and potholes; lays bricks and concrete block; builds concrete forms for catch basins, sidewalks, and curbing; pours concrete; sweeps streets; spreads gravel; clears storm drains and ditches; constructs asphalt driveway tie-ins; repairs and installs guardrails.

  • Performs set-up and clean-up of work sites: gathers equipment and supplies; empties trash; removes debris such as tree limbs, brush, leaves, and dead animals; rakes and cleans work areas; cleans and returns tools and materials.

  • Performs building maintenance: cleans buildings, sheds, and restrooms; restocks supplies; paints; replaces bulbs, ballasts, and fixtures; performs minor repairs on equipment and fences; assembles furniture; pressure-washes surfaces; cleans floors, walls, and windows; assists with setup/breakdown for events.

  • Operates a variety of equipment and tools including small tractors, commercial mowers, edgers, trimmers, chainsaws, blowers, tillers, shovels, brooms, and related equipment.

  • Performs maintenance on tools and equipment; checks fluids, refuels, performs minor repairs, greases, sharpens blades, and cleans tools; reports faulty equipment.

  • Follows safety procedures, uses safety equipment, and monitors work environment; sets up work zones; flags and directs traffic; reports incidents or accidents.

  • Completes forms, reports, time cards, and work sheets; processes documentation and communicates with supervisors and coworkers.

  • Provides assistance to other departments as needed.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • One (1) year of experience in construction, grounds maintenance, or other manual work preferred.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Valid Georgia driver’s license with satisfactory MVR.

  • Additional certifications may be required based on assignment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and apply departmental policies and procedures.

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to safely operate equipment, machinery, and tools.

  • Ability to perform basic math and record keeping.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and exercise judgment in semi-routine work situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Heavy work requiring exertion of physical effort including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting or moving objects up to 100 pounds. Must have ability to perceive colors, sounds, depth, and texture. Some tasks require verbal communication.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed outdoors with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, heat, noise, fumes, traffic hazards, and other environmental conditions.
