Overview

A Group Medical Insurance Underwriter evaluates and prices group health insurance plans for employer-sponsored benefits programs. They analyze group demographics, medical claims experience, industry risks, and market trends to determine appropriate premiums, benefits, and coverage terms. Their goal is to balance competitive pricing with sound risk management while ensuring compliance with regulatory and organizational guidelines.

Role & Responsibility

• Analyze census data, medical claims experience, and group demographics to assess overall risk.
• Prepare new business and renewal quotes using established rating models and underwriting guidelines.
• Recommend plan designs, pricing adjustments, and alternative benefit structures based on risk findings.
• Review industry classification, participation levels, and plan utilization to identify potential risk concerns.
• Communicate underwriting decisions to brokers, sales teams, and internal stakeholders clearly and professionally.
• Maintain accurate documentation of assumptions, rate calculations, and final decisions.
• Ensure compliance with internal standards, insurance regulations, and data privacy requirements.
• Collaborate with actuarial teams, product development, and account management to support group retention and growth.

Qualifications

• Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex health claims and utilization reports.
• Proficiency in Excel, rating tools, and underwriting software.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and decision-making abilities.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in insurance, business, statistics, healthcare, or a related field (preferred).
• 1–2 years of experience in group medical underwriting, group benefits, actuarial support, or related fields.
