Description:
A heavy equipment operator is a skilled professional who operates and maintains large machinery used in mining or other industrial projects. The duties include preparing and manipulating heavy equipment to ensure the appropriate movement of materials and liaising with coworkers to ensure the projects are completed accurately and safely.
Essential Functions of the Position:
- Proficiently operate various types of heavy equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, cranes, and loaders, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and operational guidelines.
- Pre-Operational Inspections: Conduct thorough pre-operational checks on equipment to ensure functionality and safety. This includes inspecting hydraulic systems, brakes, lights, and other critical components before use.
- Maintain sites by clearing debris, leveling ground, and berm as required. Ensure the site is safe for other workers and equipment.
- Load and Unload Materials efficiently load and unload materials from trucks, ensuring proper weight distribution and securing loads to prevent accidents during transportation.
- Maintain Equipment, perform routine maintenance, and make minor repairs on heavy machinery to ensure optimal performance. This includes lubricating moving parts.
- Follow Safety Regulations: Adhere to all safety regulations and guidelines while operating heavy equipment. This includes wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and following site-specific safety protocols.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Equipment Performance 101: Monitor equipment performance and report any issues or malfunctions to supervisors promptly to minimize downtime and maintain productivity.
- Operate Equipment in Various Conditions skillfully operate heavy machinery in diverse weather conditions and terrains, adapting techniques to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Load and Grade Materials accurately to specified heights and slopes, ensuring compliance and maintaining quality standards.
- Document Work Activities: maintain accurate records of work performed, including hours operated, materials used, and any incidents or safety concerns encountered during operations.
- Train and Mentor Junior Operators: Provide guidance and training to less experienced operators, sharing best practices and safety protocols to foster a safe and efficient work environment.
- Adapt to New Technologies, stay updated on advancements in heavy equipment technology and operational techniques, demonstrating a willingness to learn and adapt to new methods
Requirements:
- Conduct Risk Assessments regularly to assess potential risks associated with equipment operation and site conditions and implement measures to mitigate hazards.
- Participate in Safety Meetings: Attend regular safety meetings and training sessions to stay informed about best practices and regulatory changes at the mine site.
- Maintain a Clean Work Environment: ensure the work area is kept clean and organized, reducing the risk of accidents and promoting a safe working atmosphere.
- Understand Environmental Regulations, be knowledgeable about local environmental regulations and ensure compliance during operations, particularly in sensitive areas
- Support quality control efforts and participate in quality control measures by ensuring that work meets industry standards and project specifications throughout the operation.
