The HR Assistant provides administrative and operational support to the Human Resources Department, assisting with employee relations, benefits administration, leave management, compliance documentation, and general HR functions. This role ensures accuracy, confidentiality, and timely processing of HR-related tasks while delivering excellent service when assisting management and answering employee inquiries.
**This is not a remote position; all work is done from Big R’s home office in Pueblo, CO.
Key Responsibilities
General HR Support

Serve as the first point of contact for HR related inquiries and directing employees to the appropriate personnel when needed.

Process high-volume emails and employee Change of Status (COS) documents to include maintenance of employee records within their personnel files to maintain compliance with company policies and state/federal regulations.

Report and track progress of work-related injuries with Workers’ Compensation carriers.

Responds to unemployment claims made by previous employees.

Support HR leadership with administrative tasks, scheduling, and project coordination.
Recruitment and Applicants

Assist in creating and posting job requisitions on the company careers page and external job platforms.

Provide support to applicants having issues with the online application process.
Employee Relations Support

Assist HR in tracking employee performance documentation, disciplinary actions, and follow-up tasks.

Help maintain confidentiality and organization of sensitive employee information.
Benefit Administration

Assist employees with general benefit questions regarding medical, dental, vision, HSA, 401(k), etc.

Support HR in processing monthly new employee enrollment submissions, including collecting documentation, verifying dependent information, and assisting employees with enrollment issues.

Maintain benefit records and ensure accuracy in employee eligibility changes and payroll deductions.
Leave of Absence Administration

Support the administration of FMLA, FAMLI, ADA, and other leave programs.

Track employee leave hours, ensure proper documentation is received, and maintain communication with employees and managers.

Prepare letters, templates, and status updates related to leave and return-to-work requirements.

Ensure compliance with company policies and federal/state employment laws.
HR Systems & Data Management

Update employee information in HRIS systems.

Run reports and support data audits to ensure accuracy and internal compliance.

Support HR leadership with EDI feeds, benefit reconciliations, and routine report audits.
**Other duties as called upon to support the needs of the HR department.**
Education & Experience
-
High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate or bachelor's degree in HR, Business Administration, or related field preferred.

1 or more years of experience in HR, payroll, benefits, or administrative support preferred.
- Experience in retail, distribution, or multi-location environments is a plus.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and HRIS systems (UKG based software).

Knowledge of employment laws (FMLA, FAMLI, ADA, WC, ACA, wage & hour) preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
