POSITION SUMMARY

The Intern, Devices, Therapeutics, and Technology, supports ECRI’s mission of reducing preventable harm by contributing to the evaluation of emerging healthcare technologies. This internship provides hands-on experience in the assessment of artificial intelligence (AI) tools used in healthcare, consumer and clinical wellness devices, capital equipment, and other technologies under review by ECRI’s engineering and scientific teams.

Reporting directly to the Vice President, Devices, Therapeutics, and Technology, the intern will work alongside experienced engineers, scientists, and researchers to conduct structured evaluations, support laboratory testing, synthesize evidence, and contribute to deliverables that inform healthcare providers, payors, manufacturers, and policymakers. Work arrangement—hybrid or virtual—will be determined based on the nature of assigned projects and laboratory activity requirements.

This internship is well-suited for students enrolled in or recently graduated from programs in biomedical engineering, computer science, healthcare, or a related science discipline who are seeking practical, mission-driven experience in healthcare technology evaluation.

Essential Functions Statement(s):

  • AI and Healthcare Technology Evaluation
    • Assist in the evaluation of AI-enabled tools used in clinical and administrative healthcare settings, including clinical decision support software, diagnostic AI, and large language model (LLM)-based applications.
    • Support structured assessments of wellness devices, wearables, and consumer health technologies, including evaluation of sensor performance, data quality, usability, and evidence of clinical benefit.
    • Contribute to evaluations of capital equipment and other healthcare technologies, supporting literature reviews, data collection, and comparative analysis.
    • Research regulatory classifications and frameworks relevant to assigned technologies (e.g., FDA SaMD guidance, AI/ML-based SaMD action plan, FTC regulations for wellness products).

  • Laboratory and Technical Support
    • Participate in biomedical engineering laboratory testing of medical devices and health technologies, as applicable to assigned projects and intern’s skill set.
    • Assist with test setup, data collection, documentation, and preliminary analysis of laboratory results under the supervision of senior engineering staff.
    • Support calibration, maintenance, and organization of lab equipment and testing materials as needed.

  • Research and Evidence Synthesis
    • Conduct structured literature searches using scientific databases (e.g., PubMed, CINAHL, Embase) and regulatory databases (e.g., FDA MAUDE, 510(k) database) to support technology evaluations.
    • Summarize and synthesize evidence findings into clear, organized written summaries suitable for internal review and client-facing deliverables.
    • Support horizon scanning activities by monitoring emerging technologies, recent FDA clearances/approvals, and industry developments relevant to the department’s portfolio.

  • Reporting and Deliverable Support
    • Contribute to the development of evaluation reports, briefing documents, data summaries, and presentations for internal leadership and external stakeholders.
    • Assist in maintaining organized records, databases, and project documentation consistent with ECRI’s quality and reporting standards.
    • Participate in team meetings, departmental briefings, and project status reviews; present interim findings as appropriate.

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience is not required; this role is designed to develop early-career talent.



  • The following experiences are preferred and will strengthen a candidate’s application:



  • Academic coursework, research projects, or laboratory experience in biomedical engineering, computer science, healthcare, or a related engineering or science discipline.



  • Familiarity with healthcare technology, medical devices, health informatics, or AI/ML concepts gained through coursework, research, or extracurricular involvement.



  • Prior internship, co-op, volunteer, or clinical experience in a healthcare, research, or engineering environment is a plus.


    Education:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program. Preferred fields include:
    • Biomedical Engineering or related engineering discipline (e.g., electrical, mechanical, systems, or software engineering)
    • Computer Science or Data Science, with interest in healthcare applications
    • Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Health Informatics, or Clinical Science
    • Biology, chemistry, physics, or other natural sciences with a healthcare or technology focus
    • Graduate students (Master’s or doctoral candidates) are encouraged to apply and may be assigned to more advanced projects.

    POSITION COMPENSATION

  • The salary range for new employees in this position is $20.00 an hour, based on background, experience, and skills.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    This position operates in a remote environment and requires the individual to remain in a stationary position, whether sitting or standing, before a desk or other fixed workspace, most of their workday. In addition, this position requires the individual to occasionally move about their workspace to access and inspect work-related materials, such as file cabinets with physical files and standard office equipment. This position requires the ability to operate standard office equipment, including, but not limited to, a laptop, keyboard, mouse, webcam, and phone, as well as effectively communicate information and ideas to a wide variety of audiences in written and oral form.
