JOB SUMMARY:

Under direction, perform professional work in the various areas of library service. In assigned subject areas and on an ongoing basis, keep Library collections current: identify needs for the library’s collection and select appropriate materials for purchase, within allotted budget; review materials and decide which need to be removed from the collection. Provide in-person and telephone reference and readers advisory services. Perform other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Assist the public in selecting and locating library materials. Organize, promote, and conduct programs and/or activities to encourage reading and library use. Keep library collections current in assigned subject areas and on an ongoing basis. Identify needs for the library’s collection and select appropriate materials for purchase, within allotted budget. Review materials and decide which are candidates for weeding. Provide in-person and telephone reference and readers advisory services. Sort donated materials to identify appropriate additions to the collection. Read professional literature. Review patron requests and selection aids. Select library materials for purchase, exercising own judgment and discretion. Compile bibliographies to market collections in assigned subject areas. Coordinate and assemble displays and exhibits. Write news releases and book reviews. Present book talks to community groups. Explain and teach use of print and online reference sources to patrons. Describe/demonstrate procedures for searching computer catalog and shelf collections to obtain materials. Conduct online database searches. Conduct classes for patrons in computer usage (Internet, databases, applications, etc.) Locate information on specific subjects. Catalog and assign classification numbers and subject headings to materials. Supervise ordering, typing, filing, and mechanical processes, such as laminating, label making, and media cleaning. Communicate courteously and effectively with other employees, officials, and the public, in person, by telephone, and in writing. Perform simple repairs to materials and equipment. Monitor purchase of supplies. Place service calls for machines. Update bulletin boards and handout materials. Act as liaison for community groups. Arrange and implement outreach services. Coordinate and assemble displays and exhibits. Update bulletin boards and handout materials. Supervise and schedule part-time personnel. Coordinate and supervise volunteers. Use computer for database input/ retrieval, Microsoft applications and e-mail. Sit and stand for extended period of time while assisting patrons, retrieving materials, and answering desk telephones. Some exposure to dust, odors, and mechanical and electrical hazards, exercising appropriate safety precautions. Read source materials and computer screens to verify information. Retrieve books and materials from shelves up to 8 feet high, with the aid of step stools, using safety precautions. Lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds of materials and equipment. Weekend and evening work required.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

Operate and explain use of machines such as photocopiers, scanners, laminators. Perform basic computer troubleshooting.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSES:

Master's degree required in library science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association. Degree may be a Master of Library Science, Master of Library Service, Master of Library and Information Science, or a Master of Arts (or Science) in Library Science, usually designated as MLS or MA in LS.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:

Continued updating of education through attendance at workshops and courses required. Two years of experience preferred. Thorough knowledge required of practices, principles and techniques of modern public library operation. Must have broad knowledge of and keen interest in books and information. Must have abilities to: plan, develop, and organize activities; communicate effectively with patrons of varying ages; supervise the work of others; and use integrated library computer systems. Knowledge of the community preferred.
