Library Assistant (Part-Time)

Grade: G01 - $15.32 / hour

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to assist patrons in all aspects of library services and to provide general support by shelving, cataloging, and maintaining books.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provides customer service support; greets visitors, answers phones and emails; assists public with questions and concerns.
  • Assists patrons with locating books, placing holds, checking books in and out, and paying fines.
  • Assists patrons with public computers, printing, scanning, and copying.
  • Processes applications for library cards.
  • Receives library card applications; reviews for completeness; enters/updates patron data; explains rules and procedures to new patrons.
  • Sorts and shelves library materials; locates and re-shelves materials that have been misplaced.
  • Accepts payments for overdue fines, copies, etc.; counts and records money as needed.
  • Assists with event preparation and special projects.
  • Communicates with supervisor, co-workers, other departments, citizens, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of book classification systems
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs
  • Knowledge of various office equipment, e.g., public computers, printers, scanners, and copiers
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical computations
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to maintain composure in stressful customer service situations
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment within the scope of responsibility
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma/GED; customer service experience is strongly preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical activities required for this position involve: Sitting, standing, walking; climbing, reaching, stooping, crouching, and kneeling.

This position requires lifting: Up to 10 pounds.

This position has the following special vision requirements: Ability to view information in print and electronically. Ability to read spine labels.
