Job Description and Duties

Library Technical Assistants (Safety) follow established procedures which have been developed by Senior Librarians, Correctional Facility, or Librarians, Correctional Facility. Under the guidance of a Senior Librarian, Correctional Facility, or Librarian, Correctional Facility, incumbents in this classification perform specialized subprofessional duties, such as precataloging, interlibrary loans, book acquisition, and locating simple bibliographic information within the library system of a State correctional facility.

Such work primarily requires a practical knowledge of library functions and services and an ability to apply standard library tools, methods, and procedures within well-defined standards. This classification is distinguishable from general clerical classifications which perform typing, stenography, and general office work, and from professional librarian classifications which are involved in the development, direction, and evaluation of programs and in complex work requiring professional knowledge of the theories, principles, and techniques of library science.

Incumbents in this classification perform a variety of responsible subprofessional library tasks within well-defined standards in such functional areas as book circulation, book acquisition, catalog classification, physical upkeep of library material, book inventory, and other related work.

Incumbents may have responsibility to supervise, train, and evaluate incarcerated person/ward library clerks. Incumbents are responsible for security and control of incarcerated persons/wards using library services. These duties include maintaining order and supervising the conduct of persons committed to the Department of Corrections and the Department of the Youth Authority; preventing escapes and injury by these persons to themselves or to property; maintaining security of work areas and work materials; and inspecting premises for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs.

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s). Individuals must specify on their application that they are applying for a Training and Development assignment.

This recruitment may be used to fill any additional vacancies in this classification for the life of the recruitment.
