The Law Department is seeking a highly talented and experienced litigator to join its litigation unit reporting to the Assistant General Counsel of Litigation. The successful candidate must have at least five years of civil litigation experience practicing in New York and/or New Jersey. They will be expected to work both independently and cooperatively handling cases from inception to conclusion, including trials and appeals. Experience developing commercial and general civil litigation strategy, taking and defending depositions, making court appearances, preparing motions, conducting jury trials, and drafting and arguing appeals is required. Areas of practice include contracts, real estate, landlord tenant, bankruptcy, employment discrimination (Title VII), labor, personal injury, property damage, civil rights (ADA, ADEA, 42 USC §§ 1981 and1983, 14th Amendment, etc.), administrative proceedings, FELA, environmental (state and federal), and insurance. The selected candidate will work collaboratively with other attorneys and non-attorney staff within and outside of the Law Department in defending the agency’s position in litigated matters.

Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

· Analyzing assigned matters and developing litigation strategy after reviewing applicable law and facts, meeting with necessary witnesses, and handling matters from inception through trial, and when necessary, engaging in appellate practice.

· Reviewing and digesting pertinent documents, including complex contracts and real estate agreements in order to fully understand the Port Authority’s role and responsibilities in contested matters.

· Drafting pleadings based on in-depth research of the issues and knowledge of the facts to ensure they accurately and adequately represent the agency’s position and support the litigation strategy.

· Attending to internal and external deadlines to ensure they are met and all necessary steps are taken in a timely manner in furtherance of the litigation strategy.

· Addressing issues and offering advice to staff on related litigation matters, as needed.

· Analyzing and resolving issues of federal and state law applicable to the agency and its operations and rendering advice to Port Authority staff about such issues.

· Working with responsible persons in the Law Department and other departments to identify, address and resolve legal issues on other substantial matters.

· Fostering and maintaining close communication and interaction with all levels of agency staff, within and outside of the Law Department.

· Managing a caseload to meet deadlines and avoid conflicts in scheduling.

Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:

· Law degree from a top tier or highly regarded law school.

· Member of the Bar in good standing in New York and/or New Jersey.

· Must have at least five years of increasingly responsible experience in handling litigated matters of substantial importance.

· Demonstrated problem-solving, analytical and decision-making skills.

· Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, One Drive, Outlook, PowerPoint, Share Point, Word), as well as Adobe Acrobat (and familiarity with document/matter management systems).

· Superior writing skills as demonstrated in legal memoranda, correspondence and reports concerning litigation matters.

· Ability to handle emergency litigation matters such as orders to show cause, and preliminary injunction hearings.

· Ability to handle trials where there is substantial exposure for the Port Authority in a manner that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the case and a high standard of professionalism.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $100,000.00 - $170,000.39 per year
