Job Overview
A Mainline Pipe Layer installs and repairs underground utilities like water, sewer, and storm drains by laying, aligning, and connecting pipes. Key responsibilities include digging trenches, grading the ground, and ensuring proper pipe alignment and slope according to blueprints. The role is physically demanding, requires close attention to detail, and involves working outdoors in various weather conditions. Job responsibilities

  • Install and connect pipes: Lay pipe for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains.
  • Prepare trenches: Excavate and grade trenches to the correct depth and alignment, complying with safety regulations like OSHA standards.
  • Ensure alignment and slope: Use lasers, levels, and blueprints to make sure pipes are correctly positioned and sloped.
  • Seal joints: Connect pipes using various materials and equipment, such as cement, glue, or welding equipment.
  • Backfill and compact soil: Fill trenches around the installed pipes and compact the soil using hand tools or compactors.
  • Cut and fit pipes: Measure, cut, and fit pipe sections to the required lengths and angles.
  • Coordinate with crew: Work with other team members, such as heavy equipment operators, and direct or coordinate tasks to ensure quality and safety.
  • Handle materials: Position and handle heavy pipe segments using approved methods and tools.
  • Maintain safety: Adhere to all company policies and safety standards to minimize risks.

Required skills and abilities

  • Physical strength and stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy materials.
  • Attention to detail: Crucial for ensuring proper pipe alignment, grading, and sealing.
  • Blueprint and technical reading: Ability to read and interpret blueprints and other technical documents.

Pay: $35.00 - $40.00 per hour
