Footprints Mental Health counseling Billing Specialist
The main role of the Medical Biller is to ensure that all services are properly billed and paid for. The medical biller manages daily submissions, denials, rejections, deductibles, and delinquent accounts to ensure the corporation generates all profit for provided services possible. In addition, support of technical tasks as needed.
- Provide excellent customer service to all Footprints patients.
- Maintaining patient confidentiality as per the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
- Maintain fiduciary duty, ensuring privacy and ethical usage of private credit card information and all other sensitive financial data provided by Footprints patients.
- Checking eligibility and benefits verification for all mental health treatments.
- Manually check any payment issues 2 weeks after each initial claim to reduce prolonged treatment for uncovered patients.
- Reviewing patient bills for accuracy and completeness and obtaining any missing information.
- Preparing, reviewing, and transmitting claims using billing software, including electronic and paper claim processing.
- Following up on unpaid claims within the standard billing cycle timeframe.
- Checking each insurance payment for accuracy and compliance with contract discount.
- Calling insurance companies regarding any discrepancy in payments if necessary
- Identifying and billing secondary or tertiary insurances and reviewing accounts for insurance of patient follow-up.
- Researching and appealing denied claims.
- Answering all patient or insurance telephone inquiries pertaining to assigned accounts.
- Setting up patient payment plans and work collection accounts.
- Managing billing procedures using proper EINs, NPIs, and complying with state and board guidelines.
- Updating cash spreadsheets to track data and ensure maximum income is generated.
- Liaison with Clinical Administrator, Office Manager, regarding credentialing

Basic requirements typically listed include:
- A University degree or similar level of accreditation
- Mastery level of English Language
- Excellent customer service skills, organizational skills and willingness to work well with others and collaborate
- Ability to understand different mental health degree types and licensure lvels such as MHC intern, MHC – LP, LMHC, PhD, PsyD, MSW, LMSW, LCSW, MFT, LMFT etc.
- Ability to learn and understand all relative billing data such as CPT codes, EIN/TAX ID, NPI, ERA, EFT, credentialing, deductible, copayment, coinsurance.
- Ability to understand varying diagnosis and treatment modalities such as bipolar, major depression, anxiety, PTSD, cognitive behavioral therapy, DBT, psychodynamic.
