Mental Health/Law Enforcement Liaison -- Iowa City

CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank is seeking individuals interested in the position of Mental Health Liaison working with the Iowa City Police Department, interacting with officers and community members across Iowa City.
This position, through partnership with ICPD, will improve outcomes on mental health related calls for service and divert persons who need support and treatment from the emergency room and jail. Under the supervision of Mobile Crisis Leadership and designated law enforcement, the Mental Health / Law Enforcement Liaison will work as assigned to provide crisis intervention, referral and support to individuals in our community.
Examples of Duties:
- Work collaboratively with law enforcement, first responders, the judicial system, as well as the CommUnity Mobile Crisis Team to ensure effective service delivery to clients.
- Provide on-site crisis intervention services (intervention, referral, follow-up) to individuals in a mental health or behavioral health crisis at the request of law enforcement.
- Act as a liaison between law enforcement agencies and CommUnity in regards to crisis services delivery, data collection and coordination of care.
- Assist individuals with scheduling appointments and/or assessments or re-connecting with prior service providers. The Mental Health Liaison will make the initial contact with clients during a crisis intervention, and provide follow-up services after the initial contact to ensure effective coordination of care.
- Complete required paperwork and maintain client files in accordance with program rules and policies.
- Co-respond to crisis calls with Mobile Crisis Counselors during training period.
- Remain in contact with the individual and the treatment providers by phone and/or in person to monitor participation in recommended services. Collaborate with other service providers involved with the individual, to assist in coordinating care.
- Operate agency vehicles to transport clients as needed.
Professional Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in the human service field with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience or must have equivalent work experience.
- Must pass criminal records/child abuse checks completed by CommUnity and law enforcement as requested.
- Experience in mental health and crisis intervention strongly desired.
- Valid Iowa driver’s license and insurable under agency liability insurance
- Ability to work a somewhat flexible schedule. Hours vary based on program needs but generally Monday through Friday during the afternoon/evening (2pm-10pm).
