Mortality Coding Specialist (Remote – CDC/NCHS Support)

We are seeking experienced Mortality Coding Specialists to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), Division of Vital Statistics.

This position supports the coding of mortality and fetal death records within the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS).

Position Summary

The Mortality Coding Specialist is responsible for manual coding of causes of death and fetal death records that cannot be coded electronically through the CDC/NCHS automated coding system.

Candidates must possess strong ICD coding expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain high production and accuracy standards in a remote federal support environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Code underlying and multiple causes of death on mortality and fetal death records
• Apply ICD coding methodologies and CDC-established coding procedures
• Meet required monthly production quotas
• Maintain coding accuracy standards below established error thresholds
• Participate in quality review and validation activities
• Complete mandatory CDC/HHS security and privacy training
• Support coding correction activities when required
• Work securely using government-furnished equipment and CDC systems
• Maintain confidentiality and compliance with federal data protection requirements

Required Qualifications

• Experience with ICD coding methodologies
• Experience coding mortality or medical records
• Strong understanding of medical terminology
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment
• Strong analytical and data accuracy skills
• Ability to meet productivity metrics and deadlines
• Eligibility to obtain and maintain a federal Public Trust clearance and HHS PIV credential
• U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in support of federal contracts

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior CDC/NCHS experience
• Prior state vital records coding experience
• Nosology experience
• Experience coding cause-of-death records
• RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CPC, or related certifications
• Public health data experience

Work Location

Remote (U.S.-based) Government-furnished equipment will be provided.

Schedule

Part-time and flexible schedules may be available based on contract requirements.

Clearance Requirement

Public Trust background investigation required.
