Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and highly skilled Post-Anesthesia Care Unit Registered Nurse (PACU RN) to provide exceptional recovery care for patients transitioning from anesthesia following surgical procedures. The ideal candidate will possess comprehensive knowledge of perioperative nursing, critical care practices, and advanced patient assessment skills. As a PACU RN, you will be responsible for monitoring patient vital signs, managing pain, and ensuring safe recovery in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Your expertise will contribute to optimal patient outcomes and seamless postoperative recovery experiences.
Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough pre- and post-operative assessments, including vital signs, airway status, and level of consciousness to determine patient stability.
- Administer medications, including analgesics and sedatives, following established protocols and ensuring proper documentation in electronic health records (EHR) systems such as Epic or Cerner.
- Monitor patients closely for signs of complications such as bleeding, respiratory distress, or adverse reactions, intervening promptly as needed.
- Manage airway patency using aseptic techniques and assist with ventilator management when necessary.
- Provide wound care, including suturing assistance and ostomy care, ensuring adherence to sterile procedures.
- Collaborate with surgical teams, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care plans effectively.
- Educate patients and their families on postoperative care instructions, pain management strategies, and discharge procedures.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations and institutional policies while ensuring high standards of infection control and safety protocols.
Experience
- Proven experience in acute care settings such as hospital medicine, ICU, or emergency room environments is required.
- Demonstrated proficiency with EMR/EHR systems like Epic or Cerner for accurate medical documentation and coding (ICD-10/ICD-9).
- Critical care experience involving airway management, ventilator support, IV infusion therapy, and acute pain management is essential.
- Familiarity with surgical procedures including cardiac catheterization, spinal tap, or outpatient ambulatory surgery is preferred.
- Experience working with diverse patient populations including pediatrics (neonatal ventilator), geriatrics (memory care), or patients with developmental disabilities enhances your suitability for this role.
- Knowledge of infection control practices specific to perioperative environments along with proficiency in phlebotomy and specimen collection.
