Job Title: Painting Foreman - Steel Structures

Department: Production / Fabrication

Reports To: Production Manager / QA-QC Manager

Position Summary

The Painting Foreman is responsible for leading and supervising all painting and coating activities in the steel fabrication facility and project sites. This includes surface preparation, application, inspection, and quality control of protective coatings on structural steel in accordance with project specifications, ISO/AISC standards, and client requirements. The role demands strong technical knowledge of coating systems, paint materials, and safety practices, as well as hands on leadership in training and managing a team of painters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervision & Coordination
    • Plan, organize, and supervise daily painting and coating operations on fabricated steel structures.
    • Assign tasks, monitor progress, and ensure productivity targets are achieved with quality and safety.
    • Coordinate with QA/QC, production, and project teams to ensure painting works align with schedule and standards.
  • Technical & Quality Control
    • Ensure surface preparation, blasting, and coating processes comply with approved paint system specifications (e.g., epoxy primers, polyurethane top coats, zinc phosphate, zinc rich coatings).
    • Conduct visual inspections, dry film thickness (DFT) measurements, adhesion tests, and ensure compliance with inspection test plans (ITPs).
    • Maintain and ensure calibration of painting and inspection equipment (DFT gauges, hygrometers, etc.).
    • Identify and rectify coating defects such as runs, pinholes, undercoating, or poor adhesion.
  • Material Management
    • Manage paint material storage as per manufacturer's recommendations (temperature, humidity, shelf life).
    • Track paint material consumption, maintain inventory, and prepare daily paint usage reports.
    • Ensure proper mixing ratios, induction times, and application methods are followed for epoxy and polyurethane systems.
  • Training & Team Development
    • Train and mentor painters on correct application techniques, surface preparation methods, and safety standards.
    • Conduct toolbox talks, safety briefings, and continuous improvement sessions.
  • Safety & Compliance
    • Enforce proper use of PPE and ensure safe handling of paints, solvents, and thinners in accordance with MSDS guidelines.
    • Ensure compliance with company HSE policies, ISO 9001, ISO 45001, and AISC painting quality requirements.
Qualifications
  • Diploma or Technical Certificate in Mechanical / Industrial / Coating Technology (preferred).
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in industrial or structural steel painting supervision.
  • Strong knowledge of epoxy, polyurethane, zinc rich, and multi coat systems.
  • Familiarity with surface preparation standards (SSPC, NACE, ISO 8501, etc.) and inspection methods.
  • Experience with DFT measurement, surface profile, humidity, and temperature control.
  • Ability to read and interpret paint system data sheets, ITPs, and project specifications.
  • Effective leadership, communication, and problem solving skills.
  • Preferred: Candidates who can join immediately.
Preferred Certifications
  • NACE Level 1 or 2 / SSPC Protective Coatings Inspector (PCI) - preferred.
  • Safety certification (OSHA or equivalent) - desirable.
Work Environment
  • Factory based with periodic visits to erection sites.
  • Exposure to paint fumes, solvents, and high noise environments - PPE and safety compliance mandatory.
