Burke, Williams & Sorensen, LLP seeks an experienced Litigation Paralegal to join our San Diego office. This position provides comprehensive support to attorneys throughout all phases of complex civil litigation in both California state and federal courts, with a focus on insurance defense matters. The ideal candidate will be a proactive professional with substantial trial experience, a strong command of procedural rules, and the ability to manage multiple cases under tight deadlines.

This position is a full-time, non-exempt, 7.5-hour/day position. Our current arrangement for staff is to work 2 days on-site and 3 days from home weekly upon satisfactory completion of their introductory period. This arrangement may be changed at any time based on business needs and decisions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist attorneys with case management, discovery, and trial preparation in both California state and federal courts.
  • Provide hands-on support in insurance defense matters, including managing claim files, preparing medical and damages summaries, coordinating with adjusters, and organizing discovery responses and trial materials.
  • Prepare pleadings, motions, and discovery responses; maintain case chronologies, witness lists, and exhibit indexes.
  • Manage large volumes of documents and evidence using Relativity, CaseMap, and NetDocuments to ensure efficient and accurate tracking.
  • Conduct factual and legal research using LexisNexis, Westlaw, and other databases.
  • Serve as liaison between attorneys, clients, experts, witnesses, and insurance carriers, ensuring effective communication and coordination.
  • Provide direct trial support, including exhibit preparation, courtroom logistics, and post-trial follow-up.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Meets requirements under California Business & Professions Code § 6450.
  • Bachelor’s degree and ABA-approved Paralegal Certificate required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of litigation experience, including substantial trial and federal court experience.
  • Insurance defense experience strongly preferred, especially in personal injury, property damage, or employment liability matters.
  • Comprehensive understanding of California and federal court procedures, including e-filing systems (One Legal, CM/ECF).
  • Proficiency with litigation technology and trial presentation tools (Relativity, CaseMap, TrialDirector, NetDocuments, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills; ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines with accuracy and professionalism.

COMPENSATION

The pay range for this role is the hourly equivalent of $90,000 – $115,000 annually. Actual compensation will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skillset, and successful track record. Annual discretionary bonuses, competitive health insurance benefits, and 401 (k) with a partial match are offered when individuals are eligible for benefits.
