Job Title: Pipeline Engineer
Job Summary
The Pipeline Engineer is responsible for the design, planning, fabrication, welding, installation, and maintenance of pipelines (CS, MS, HDPE, GRP) with diameters above 100mm. This role requires a strong technical background in pipeline engineering, hands-on experience in fabrication and welding, and the ability to ensure compliance with industry standards, project specifications, and safety regulations. The Pipeline Engineer will collaborate with project teams, supervisors, and clients to deliver efficient, safe, and cost-effective pipeline systems while maintaining high-quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Pipeline Design and Engineering
- Develop detailed pipeline designs, including material selection, sizing, routing, and alignment for CS, MS, HDPE, and GRP pipes above 100mm.
- Prepare engineering drawings, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), isometric drawings, and specifications using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
- Perform stress analysis, hydraulic calculations, and thermal expansion assessments to ensure pipeline integrity under operating conditions.
- Fabrication and Welding Oversight
- Provide technical guidance on the fabrication and welding of CS, MS, HDPE, and GRP pipelines, ensuring adherence to Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR).
- Supervise welding processes such as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), and fusion welding techniques for HDPE/GRP pipes.
- Review and approve welding techniques, joint preparation, and fit-up procedures to ensure compliance with standards like ASME B31.3, API 1104, and ASTM.
- Project Planning and Execution
- Collaborate with project managers to develop project schedules, cost estimates, and material procurement plans for pipeline systems.
- Coordinate with fabrication teams, supervisors, and contractors to ensure timely execution of pipeline installation and testing.
- Monitor project progress, identify risks, and implement corrective actions to meet deadlines and budgets.
- Quality Assurance and Control
- Develop and implement quality control plans for pipeline fabrication, welding, and installation.
- Conduct inspections and oversee Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods (e.g., Radiographic Testing, Ultrasonic Testing) to verify weld quality and pipe integrity.
- Ensure compliance with client requirements, industry standards, and regulatory codes for pipeline systems.
- Installation and Commissioning
- Oversee the installation of pipelines in diverse environments (e.g., onshore, offshore, urban, or industrial settings), ensuring proper trenching, laying, backfilling, and reinstatement.
- Supervise hydrostatic and pneumatic testing of pipelines to confirm operational readiness and leak-free performance.
- Assist in commissioning and handover of pipeline systems to clients, providing technical documentation and as-built drawings.
- Material and Equipment Selection
- Specify materials (CS, MS, HDPE, GRP) based on project requirements, environmental conditions, and fluid properties.
- Evaluate and select welding equipment, fittings, and consumables to ensure compatibility and performance.
- Verify material certifications and compliance with standards before use in fabrication and installation.
- Safety and Compliance
- Ensure all pipeline activities comply with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) regulations and company policies.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation measures for fabrication, welding, and installation processes.
- Promote a safety-first culture by enforcing the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
- Technical Support and Documentation
- Provide technical support to field teams, troubleshoot issues related to fabrication, welding, or installation, and propose solutions.
- Prepare detailed reports, including progress updates, quality inspection records, and test results for project documentation.
- Maintain accurate records of design changes, material usage, and as-built documentation for future reference.
Qualifications and Skills
- Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in pipeline engineering, with a focus on fabrication, welding, and installation of CS, MS, HDPE, and GRP pipes above 100mm.
- Proven track record of working on pipeline projects in industries such as oil and gas, water supply, or wastewater management.
- Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of pipeline design principles, including stress analysis, hydraulics, and material selection.
- Proficiency in welding processes for CS/MS (e.g., SMAW, GTAW, GMAW) and fusion welding for HDPE/GRP pipes.
- Familiarity with industry standards such as ASME B31.3, API 1104, ASTM, AWWA, and ISO standards for pipelines.
- Experience with NDT methods and interpretation of test results for quality assurance.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and pipeline design tools (e.g., CAESAR II, Bentley AutoPIPE).
- Certifications (Preferred)
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent (e.g., AWS, CSWIP).
- NDT Level II certification in Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), or Magnetic Particle Testing (MT).
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or similar.
- Safety certifications such as OSHA, NEBOSH, or equivalent.
- Soft Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address technical challenges.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and clients.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on quality and compliance.
Working Conditions
- The role may involve working in both office and field environments, including remote locations, industrial sites, or offshore facilities.
- Willingness to travel to project sites and work extended hours, including weekends or on-call shifts, as required.
- Exposure to challenging conditions such as extreme weather, heights, or confined spaces during site visits.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
