We’re seeking a highly motivated, people-oriented Principal Machine Learning Researcher to lead impactful machine learning projects as part of the Action Lab. Action Lab combines the power of data and research to evaluate and inform business decisions, creating innovative solutions. Every day you’ll make a difference in the lives of others by initiating, overseeing, and operationalizing machine learning projects; establishing research design methodologies; employing statistical modeling techniques; and analyzing complex datasets to deliver functional data products. You will be responsible for maintaining rigorous methodological standards and leading the design, direction, and implementation of machine learning projects. In addition, you will effectively communicate findings to stakeholders in EdPlus and continuously iterate based on feedback to improve the effectiveness of produced data products.

Action Lab is a data-driven, research-focused service organization—an impact hub—that supports ASU and EdPlus initiatives by equipping leaders with the insights and analyses they need to make informed, evidence-based decisions to improve student learning, motivation, and persistence. Action Lab drives transformational change in education through data and research, focusing on learner behaviors and the factors that drive success.

Essential Duties :

  • Selects, develops, and determines appropriate machine learning methodologies, data analyses, and statistical procedures for various projects, with an emphasis on predictive modeling.
  • Determines the most effective approach to meet specific research questions and objectives.
  • Serves as the primary researcher and leader for machine learning projects, effectively communicating with internal/external teams and executive staff to ensure project alignment.
  • Identifies appropriate data sources to meet stakeholder needs; transforms and prepares new datasets to build foundational models for data science and machine learning.
  • Analyzes and interprets quantitative and qualitative data using advanced statistical and machine-learning techniques.
  • Writes technical reports, presentations, and research articles for publication, showcasing innovative findings and methodologies.
  • Prepares and presents research findings to various audiences, including technical and non-technical stakeholders, on machine learning models and outcomes.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, analyzes, and resolves technical issues to ensure ongoing data integrity.
  • Works internally with teams on related projects that are being leveraged across units within EdPlus.
  • Assumes or coordinates other duties or projects as assigned or directed.

NOTE : This is not a fully remote position. Must be able to reliably commute to Scottsdale AZ.

Desired Qualifications:

  • PhD in Business Analytics, Statistics, Learning Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field and two years of professional experience in information analysis or a relevant field.
  • Evidence of managing multiple direct reports while overseeing large research projects.
  • Evidence of the ability to proficiently manipulate, report, and analyze enterprise data to develop scalable data products and research assets.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting, preferably with higher education student data.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of big data processing languages such as Python, R, SQL, and Scala.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of deep learning platforms such as Keras, TensorFlow, and/or PyTorch.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistical modeling, machine learning, data, and text-mining concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage Python, SQL within cloud frameworks for advanced analytics and data processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly articulate machine learning pipeline architectures, modeling approaches, and decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with Jira or related project management tools.
  • Demonstrated skill in thinking critically and developing creative solutions to challenging problems.
  • Evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills with stakeholders at all levels of the organization, including clearly explaining complex technical processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a variety of individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead by example in communication, participation, and encouragement.
