Position Overview:
As an integral member of the design team, the Product Design Engineer position aides in developing innovative, high quality, effective products for the outdoor play industry and product engineering for existing products. This position coordinates projects with necessary departments and communicates product designs. Providing product training and support in the field as required.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
- Plan, design, model, and prepare drawings and documentation for new and revised products.
- Utilize technical knowledge when designing and modifying products to insure they are cost efficient and maximize profit margins.
- Coordinate and oversee outsourced design projects.
- Responsible for compliance to playground standards and programs: IPEMA, CPSC, ASTM, CSA, and EN.
- Responsible for managing and reporting on project schedules to ensure timely and effective completion.
- Sets up and performs R&D testing of parts.
- Completes project proposals in 2d and 3d utilizing SolidWorks, AutoCAD or other software as necessary.
- Each proposal includes layout design and anchoring design recommendations in a prepared presentation, as required.
- Create and maintain installation instructions and user guides.
- Enter data in the ERP system Syteline: BOM's, labour routings, and determine product cost.
- ISO validation of new and revised parts.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Related bachelor’s degree such as a BS in Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university is preferred; or two to four years related work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and professional work experience.
- Experience in Value Engineering, including SAVE International certifications, is a plus.
- E.I.T. or another professional competency preferred.
- Experience in product development and working knowledge of an APQP design strategy preferred.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in Microsoft Office Programs; expert knowledge of SolidWorks is required. Knowledge of SyteLine or similar systems is a plus.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
- Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.
- Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory.
- Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to read, analyse, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
- Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
- Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Attendance Requirement:
Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such a level as is determined in the company’s employee handbook. Must be available and willing to work overtime hours as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
