Job Overview:
Product Designer III is responsible for leading product initiatives from concept through production for evaporate cooling and other HVAC equipment. This role focuses on industrial design, sheet metal designs, and new product development. Product Designer III brings creativity to improve existing designs and develop new, innovative solutions. This position collaborates closely with Engineering, Productions, Sales, and Marketing to ensure designs meet performance, cost, and manufacturability requirements.
Main Responsibilities:
- Lead new product development and value engineering projects
- Research, develop, design, and evaluate components, assemblies, processes, tools and equipment
- Investigate and evaluate existing technologies and emerging technologies
- Visualize, conceive, and develop design solutions for complex product challenges
- Plan and manage work to ensure timely completion of development, lab testing and manufacturing equipment to the project requirements
- Actively contribute to design and development process, including creating solutions, reporting on progress and design reviews
- Perform research, design and development of manufacturing processes including production flow, assembly methods, and production equipment
- Support product development planning by documenting process procedures, identifying tooling needs and coordinating technical reviews
- Interface with engineers, management, production, and customers to understand improvement needs, assess priorities, and provide updates
- Develop working knowledge of Industry Codes (e.g., UL, AMCA, NEC) as related to HVAC equipment
- Coordinate new product requirements with Sales and Marketing teams
- Design sheet metal parts, enclosure, control systems and mechanical components for HVAC and cooling products
- Build and evaluate prototypes, support lab testing, and assist with agency compliance processes.
- Create 2D models, drawings and assemblies using Solidworks and PDM system
- Utilize PMI design tables and ensure design accuracy
- Review BOMs and engineering drawings for errors and discrepancies
- Lead and coordinate production pilot runs
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety procedures.
Level of Authority:
- Release completed designs and BOMs to drafting /document control for production for cost analysis by IE
- Approve purchased components in new designs
- Specify requirements for customs or purchased components and obtain quotes
Measuring Performance:
- On-time completion of project tasks and final deliverables per project plan.
- Skill Score rating.
- Achievement of annual goals.
- Quality of engineering documentation (based on reported issues).
- BOM error rate in JDE.
- PDM file-management quality (based on reported issues).
Requirements:
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design, Industrial Engineering, or a related design field.
- Minimum 5 years of product design experience in manufacturing environments.
- Strong ability to identify and integrate new technologies into products
- Excellent mechanical aptitude and understanding of mechanisms
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, especially sheet metal fabrication, assembly and prototyping
- Working knowledge of storage architecture and web-hosted applications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in SolidWorks, including assemblies and sheet metal
- Minimum 5 years of experience using AutoCAD 2D
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams
- Ability to read, create and improve engineering drawings and BOMS
- High creativity with strong conceptual designing capabilities
- Strong analytical, research and problem solving
- Self-motivated, organized, adaptable, and able to manage multiple projects
- Ability to mentor others and lead by example in design practices and processes
