Role Overview
The Product Specification Sales Engineer is the critical link between technical product knowledge and commercial execution. You will be responsible for proactively engaging with architects, consultants, designers, and developers to secure the specification of Opus Building Materials' high-end products on major construction projects. This role requires a strong technical background in building materials, a consultative sales approach, and the ability to translate technical specifications into successful sales.
Key Responsibilities1. Specification & Technical Sales
- Targeted Engagement: Systematically visit and build relationships with key design and specification decision-makers (Architects, Interior Designers, Consultants) to promote Opus's full range of products (e.g., Operable Partitions, Acoustic Panels, Raised Access Flooring, Specialty Cladding).
- Product Specification: Successfully get Opus products specified in Bill of Quantities (BOQs) and project tender documents, actively defending the specification during value-engineering stages.
- Technical Consultation: Act as the primary technical advisor, providing detailed product information, performance data, test certificates, and advising on material suitability, technical feasibility, and application requirements.
- Presentations & Education: Conduct professional "Lunch & Learn" sessions, technical workshops, and product demonstrations for client teams.
2. Project Management & Documentation
- Drawing Review: Accurately review project drawings, material schedules, and tender documents to ensure correct product alignment and prepare compliant technical submittals and mock-ups.
- Quotation Support: Collaborate with the estimation and sales teams to ensure all quotations and proposals are technically accurate and aligned with the approved specifications.
- Technical Support: Provide pre-sales and post-sales technical assistance, including site visits as required to verify installation quality and resolve product-related issues.
3. Business Development & Market Insight
- Market Analysis: Stay current on industry standards, building codes, competitor products, and emerging trends in architectural finishing materials to maintain a competitive edge.
- Lead Generation: Identify new project opportunities and track them from the concept/design stage through to tender and award.
- Reporting: Maintain accurate records of all specification activities, client interactions, and project status using the company's CRM system.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a Specification Sales, Technical Sales, or Pre-Sales Consultant role, preferably within the building materials, architectural finishes, interior fit-out, or façade systems sector.
- Technical Acumen: Strong technical understanding of construction methods, material performance characteristics, and the ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications with high accuracy.
- Soft Skills: Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build long-term, trusting relationships with high-level design professionals.
- Mobility: Must hold a valid driver's license and be willing to travel frequently for client and site visits.
