Role Description

As a Subject Matter Expert in the Short-term Gas team in Houston, you will be responsible for supporting the S&D components of our North American natural gas market fundamentals suite and communicating the results of their and the group’s analysis to clients, prospects, and other market participants.

The role requires a mix of subject matter expertise, client relationships, strategic planning, and coaching capabilities to create value for our clients and Wood Mackenzie. The preferred candidate will have extensive prior exposure to gas and associated commodity markets such as power, oil, and NGLs, with intimate familiarity of NYMEX and/or basis markets.

The Gas & LNG research practice at Wood Mackenzie leverages unique, proprietary information and modelling to serve clients, and together we work with a range of clients including national and major oil companies, utilities, investment banks, and institutional investors. This is a fantastic opportunity to make an impact.

This role will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and operating regional and macro market balances and forecasts to identify market opportunities and communicate those to clients. Furthermore, this role will support the S&D team on its current products and as it looks to build out new products. This role will require the delegation of work within the team, and it must be able to advise those within the team as to the necessary strategic direction of its point-of-view. This position will be located in Houston, TX and requires travel at roughly 25% of time.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Extensive exposure to North American natural gas markets. Preference will be given to candidates with prior exposure to commodities associated with gas markets such as power, oil, NGLs, and LNG. Subject matter expertise is a must.

  • Intimate familiarity with fundamentals of NYMEX and basis markets.

  • Demonstrated experience creating and/or operating supply, demand, and storage models.

  • Experience with near- and long-term forecasting preferred.

  • Ability to and comfort with presenting in front of small and large groups to communicate company views on markets and methodologies.

  • Ability to support sales to prospects and existing clients.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline such as business, economics, finance, statistics, engineering, or energy planning, or equivalent experience.

  • 10+ years of experience conducting market analysis and model development in the commodities sphere.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of NYMEX fundamentals and trends.

  • Familiarity with North American basis markets and influences on each.

  • Preference will be given to those with proficiency in SQL and advanced stats packages, such as Python or R.

  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.


Role Responsibilities

  • Support Gas market product across Wood Mackenzie´s short term suit.

  • Leverage personal market expertise to deliver high quality commercial insight, identify market opportunities and communicate those to clients.

  • Establish senior-level contacts in key clients to understand their business and priorities and translate that into commercially focused analysis and data.

  • Present our view and regularly gather feedback on its alignments to the highest-value use cases for clients.

  • Deliver a content roadmap that supports commercial opportunities our short-term offerings.

  • Work with client management and consulting to generate new research, sales and consulting opportunities.

  • Support marketing efforts: publications, internal and external events, press briefings and social media to drive commercial growth.

  • Lead wider projects and new initiatives across the gas and LNG business. Ensure the alignment of Gas and LNG research with the wider commodities view.

  • Guiding the team as they learn about the market. Coach them to develop the necessary research skills and market knowledge necessary to excel at their roles.

  • Contribute to a positive team culture in the team, in line with the Gas & LNG subsegment values and behaviours.
