Description of Work

This full-time permanent position serves as a research historian for the Office of Archives and History, primarily focused on the departmental 250th commemoration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence (A250 NC). To conduct in-depth historical research and produce detailed documentary reports that support the programs of the North Carolina Office of Archives and History. This includes contributing to exhibits, publications, and commemorative efforts; ensuring historical accuracy in public-facing materials; and responding to historical inquiries from government agencies, media, scholars, and the public. The role emphasizes strong research and writing skills, with a focus on clear, analytical communication of North Carolina’s history across various platforms.

Recruitment Range: $39,671 - $54,743 Annually

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated experience conducting historical research in primary and secondary sources.

  • Demonstrated experience in writing and publishing historical material for a general adult audience.

  • Demonstrated experience with outreach events and educational programming.

  • Demonstrated experience using digital research tools, word processing, and database systems.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct detailed and comprehensive historical research to support programs of the North Carolina Office of Archives and History, including commemorative initiatives.

  • Prepare and edit written material such as research reports, exhibit panels, book manuscripts, blogs, and articles for historical accuracy and clarity.

  • Provide background research and content review for the North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program.

  • Respond to historical information requests from government agencies, media, scholars, and the public in a timely and accurate manner

  • Deliver public talks, lectures, and outreach presentations to partner organizations and community groups.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work Monday through Friday - 8:00am - 4:30pm.

  • Must have the ability to read, write, spell, transcribe, and communicate clearly.

  • Ability to conduct thorough historical research with minimal supervision.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree in history from an appropriately accredited institution

AND

two years of progressive experience in a historical agency that has included research experience;

OR

Bachelor’s degree in history from an appropriately accredited institution

three years of progressive experience in a historical agency that has included research experience;

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Section/Unit Description :

In keeping with the legislation that created North Carolina Office of Archives and History (then the North Carolina Historical Commission) in 1903, the mission of the Historical Research section of the Historical Research and Publications Division is to foster, promote, and encourage study and appreciation of state history through historical research to support programs in the Department. By making the state's history and wealth of historical resources available to students, teachers, scholars, and the North Carolinian public at large, the historical research section fosters and preserves North Carolinian collective memory, while maintaining high professional and editorial standards.

Division Description :

The Division of Historical Research and Publications coordinates research and vetting for historical accuracy of written materials produced by various offices of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR). Within the office rest several established programs or initiatives including the publications function of the Office of Archives and History, which extends back to 1907, when the first title appeared. The Historical Research and Publications Division produces the North Carolina Historical Review and is the base for the digital publications unit, MOSAICNC. The office also administers the State Highway Historical Marker Program, in conjunction with the Department of Transportation. The division also shepherds the agency’s commemorative efforts, such as America 250 NC, creatively and responsibly, as directed by DNCR senior leadership.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference
