Summary:
The Secondary Math Teacher delivers high-quality instruction across a variety of math courses to support student learning and achievement. Responsibilities include creating engaging lessons and assessments, preparing course materials, and serving as an advisor at the middle or high school level. The role involves close collaboration with administrators, instructional coaches, coordinators, and the middle school team. The teacher will also participate in community-building events, instructional activities, field studies, and professional development as needed or assigned.

Major Duties:
The primary duty of the Secondary Math Teacher is to provide effective math instruction while supporting students’ guidance, discipline, welfare, and safety. Key responsibilities include:

Planning for Student Success:

  • Develop lessons and activities tailored to individual student needs, using data to assess current skills, knowledge, and growth.

Building Relationships:

  • Cultivate positive relationships with students through empathy, rapport, and active listening.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and support staff to meet student needs.

Lesson Planning and Instruction:

  • Create and deliver instruction aligned with best practices, including clear objectives, assessments, and plans for re-teaching when necessary.

Grading and Communication:

  • Provide timely, meaningful feedback and grading.
  • Communicate clearly with students, families, and colleagues to support progress and collaboration.

Active Participation:

  • Attend and contribute to faculty, grade-level, and departmental meetings.
  • Support the planning, budgeting, implementation, and evaluation of school programs in alignment with school goals and policies.

Monitoring Student Well-Being:

  • Identify and respond to signs of bullying, harassment, academic struggles, emotional concerns, or other challenges.
  • Report concerns promptly to administrators or designated staff.

Supporting Student Accommodations:

  • Identify and address the needs of students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or 504 plans.
  • Ensure compliance with legal requirements and school procedures.

Professional Growth:

  • Maintain an annual professional growth plan and review progress with an administrator.
  • Engage in continuous improvement and reflective practice.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mathematics, Education, or a related field (e.g., Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science).
  • Successful student teaching, internship, or prior teaching experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to collaboration and team-oriented work.
  • Ability to maintain positive and productive student behavior.
  • Proficiency in assessment, instruction, and evaluation strategies.
  • Ability to foster a community of learners using effective instructional practices.
  • Understanding of child and adolescent development and its application to curriculum and instruction.
  • Knowledge of strategies to support diverse learners.
  • Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Understanding of how teaching practices influence learning outcomes.
  • Ability to use technology effectively for instruction, assessment, and student learning.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and reflection.
  • Consistent reliability in attendance, punctuality, and follow-through.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Possession of a Hawaii State Teacher License (preferred but not required).
  • Completion of a teacher certification program at an accredited institution.
  • Successful completion of Highly Qualified (HQ) requirements, including relevant Praxis exams.
  • At least three years of experience teaching a broad range of middle and/or high school math courses.

Job Types: Full-time, Temporary

Pay: $50,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
