POSITION
: SECONDARY REGIONAL ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION TEACHER - School Year 2026-2027


LOCATION
: Calvert County Alternative Program


JOB SUMMARY
: Under the direction of Student Services, in collaboration with the Coordinator of Alternative Education, plans and implements a program for students to improve student performance, attendance, behavior, remediate academic deficiencies, and facilitate student success in the regular school program. Utilizing proactive instructional and social-emotional strategies to identify needed skills to be successful in a school environment.

: Director of Student Services, Coordinator of Alternative Education


EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
: At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:

  • A professional teaching certificate from the Maryland State Department of Education; or
  • A conditional degree certificate from the Maryland State Department of Education as outlined in the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR).
  • At least three years of successful teaching experience preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
:

  • Ability to understand and communicate with both verbal and written skills.
  • Understanding of and ability to maintain rapport with persons from diverse, cultural, ethnic, and racial groups.
  • Satisfactory evaluations and demonstrated mastery of the essential skills of teaching.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students.
  • Provides social skills and behavior modification activities for students.
  • Monitors and evaluates student outcomes.
  • Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community.
  • Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of assigned students.
  • Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of children.
  • Provides students with the appropriate skills to successfully return to their original placement.
  • Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices.
  • Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities to provide an appropriate and effective individualized instructional program.
  • Maintains regular, on-time attendance.
  • Collaborates with regular education staff regarding the use of instructional accommodations and modifications.

Performs related work as required or assigned by the Coordinator of Alternative Education or Director of Student Services.

: Position requires significant periods of standing and walking and is performed in a typical school environment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
: Ten (10) month position and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the current Calvert County Public Schools’ salary schedule for teachers. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.


EVALUATION
: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools.


EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION
: 2026-2027 school year

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.


State law requires that anyone hired after October 1, 1986, who will have contact with school children, must be fingerprinted and submit to a criminal background investigation. Federal law requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) in person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.

Applicants should also include contact information for organizations in which you have volunteered, coached, mentor, tutored or otherwise had direct contact with minors.
