The primary purpose of the State Crime Laboratory is to accept, find, preserve and provide scientific forensic analysis of evidence for the criminal justice community. The forensic services provided include in-lab analyses, technical field assistance, and expert witness testimony in the following areas: Digital Evidence, Drug Chemistry, Firearm & Tool Mark, Forensic Biology, DNA Database, Latent Evidence, Toxicology and Trace Evidence.

The primary purpose of this Chemistry Technician is to provide technical support to the Drug Chemistry Section. Responsibilities include calibration and maintenance of section instrumentation, handling and precise documentation of Drug Chemistry evidence, preparation of chemical reagents and solutions used in Drug Chemistry analysis. The Chemistry Technician also performs Quality Control checks of reagents and instrumentation, as well as assisting with the analytical chemistry techniques performed as a part of the Drug Chemistry Technical Procedures. This position also provides expert testimony as necessary.

The Chemistry Technician is responsible for performing the following duties according to Standard Operating Procedures, including but not limited to:
a. Maintaining the laboratory equipment and instrumentation by performing maintenance, basic repairs, daily tunes, calibration checks, and keeping logs for each instrument. The technician will be expected to operate, calibrate, performance check and troubleshoot digital balances, microscopes, FTIR-ATR, and GC/MS instrumentation and any other equipment or instrumentation as needed.
b. Preparing chemical reagents and solvents, and documenting the preparation in the appropriate logs. Performing Quality Control checks on prepared reagents and documenting these checks.
c. Washing glassware and cleaning laboratory work areas.
d. Stocking chemical and laboratory supplies.
e. Maintaining chemical and/or biological hazardous waste storage areas.
f. Assisting section Forensic Scientists as needed.

The Chemistry Technician will work with the Evidence Control Unit to ensure seamless transfer of evidence between evidence intake and the Drug Chemistry Section.

The selected candidate will undergo and must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation which may take several months to complete. The background investigation includes:
  • polygraph
  • credit and arrest checks
  • interviews with associates to include personal and business references, past employers, and neighbors
  • verification of education achievement
  • fingerprinting
  • urinalysis drug screening

Out of state applicants: After the initial interview, this may require the applicant to return to the State of North Carolina multiple times at his or her own expense to undergo the background investigation process.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or closely related field to include chemistry laboratory coursework.
  • Knowledge of scientific methodology and of the hazards involved in laboratory procedures along with related safety practices.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles, concepts, theories and reference sources used in the laboratory application of analytical chemistry and other related sciences.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in one of the chemical, biological, microbiological, environmental or natural resource sciences including related chemistry laboratory coursework from an appropriately accredited institution; or Associate's degree in one of the chemical, biological, microbiological, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum including related chemistry laboratory coursework from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related chemistry laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
