Senior Materials Engineer (Infrastructure Project)

Responsibilities
  1. Material Selection and Specification

    Review project requirements, specifications, and design documents to determine material needs.

    Recommend appropriate materials based on project requirements, environmental conditions, and cost considerations.

    Ensure that selected materials comply with relevant codes, standards (e.g., ASTM, BS, ISO), and client specifications.

  2. Quality Assurance and Control

    Develop and implement quality control procedures for materials used in the project.

    Conduct inspections and tests on materials to ensure they meet quality standards and specifications.

    Approve or reject materials based on test results and compliance with project requirements.

    Monitor the quality of materials during production, delivery, and installation.

  3. Material Testing and Certification

    Oversee laboratory and on-site testing of materials, such as concrete, asphalt, steel, soil, aggregates, and other construction materials.

    Review and approve material test reports, certificates of compliance, and other documentation.

    Ensure that non-conforming materials are identified, documented, and addressed promptly.

  4. Procurement and Vendor Management

    Collaborate with procurement teams to source materials from approved suppliers and vendors.

    Evaluate and approve material suppliers based on their ability to meet quality and delivery requirements.

    Conduct audits of suppliers and manufacturers to ensure compliance with quality standards.

  5. Material Optimization and Cost Control

    Identify opportunities to optimize material usage and reduce waste without compromising quality or performance.

    Recommend cost-effective alternatives to specified materials while ensuring compliance with project requirements.

    Monitor material costs and ensure they align with the project budget.

  6. Documentation and Reporting

    Maintain detailed records of material approvals, test results, and quality control activities.

    Prepare and submit regular reports on material quality, usage, and compliance to project management and stakeholders.

    Document any material-related issues and track their resolution.

  7. Compliance with Standards and Regulations

    Ensure that all materials used in the project comply with local, national, and international standards and regulations.

    Stay updated on changes to material standards, codes, and industry best practices.

    Liaise with regulatory authorities and certification bodies as required.

  8. Coordination with Project Teams

    Work closely with design engineers, site engineers, and contractors to address material-related issues.

    Provide technical support and guidance to project teams regarding material selection, testing, and usage.

    Coordinate with construction teams to ensure proper handling, storage, and installation of materials.

  9. Research and Development

    Conduct research on new materials, technologies, and methods to improve project performance and sustainability.

    Evaluate the environmental impact of materials and recommend sustainable alternatives where possible.

    Stay updated on advancements in material science and construction technologies.

  10. Problem-Solving and Troubleshooting

    Investigate material-related issues, such as defects, failures, or non-conformances, and recommend corrective actions.

    Analyze root causes of material failures and implement preventive measures to avoid recurrence.

    Provide solutions to material-related challenges encountered during construction or manufacturing.

  11. Training and Mentorship

    Provide training and guidance to junior engineers, technicians, and site staff on material-related topics.

    Share knowledge and expertise to improve the overall material management practices within the organization.

    Promote awareness of quality standards and best practices among project teams.

Required Skills
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, a related engineering discipline, or a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of extensive experience in material engineering, quality control, and construction, including at least 2 years in construction supervision on large-scale infrastructure projects within Abu Dhabi.
  • Strong understanding of material properties, testing methods, and standards (e.g., ASTM, BS, ISO).
  • Ability to analyze test results, identify material issues, and recommend solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with project teams, suppliers, and stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to address material-related challenges effectively.
  • Familiarity with material testing software, quality management systems, and project management tools.
