Savannah River Site (SRS) in
Aiken, SC.
Salary: $80/hr - $86/hr
Location: Aiken, SC (Hybrid)

Work Schedule: 40-hour work week; schedules include 5/8s, 4/10s, or 9/80s
Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain DOE “Q” clearance required; active clearance not initially required. Active eFOCI and Facility Level Clearance with DOE/NNSA required.
As a
Senior Software Engineer, you will lead efforts to design, develop, and maintain complex applications in support of Department of Energy (DOE) initiatives. Your work will ensure the operational readiness, cyber compliance, and technical integrity of mission-critical systems. This role is vital to sustaining long-term IT capabilities that support national security and scientific advancement at the Savannah River Site.
To be considered, candidates must meet all of the following:- Minimum 10 years of software engineering experience on DOE projects—DOE project background is essential.
- Fluency in one or more programming languages: JavaScript, VB, C+, and/or Python.
- Eligible for a DOE “Q” clearance—applicants without U.S. citizenship or the ability to obtain clearance will not be considered.
- Maintain operational status of assigned applications, resolving customer support issues and testing upgrades.
- Lead moderately complex software engineering initiatives and projects.
- Apply knowledge of functional and system requirements in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Guide and mentor less experienced personnel in technical development and documentation practices.
- Evaluate new automation opportunities and define cost-benefit parameters.
- Perform root cause analysis for complex issues and implement corrective actions.
- Execute full software development lifecycle tasks including testing, debugging, documentation, and validation.
- Maintain federal compliance and cybersecurity posture of systems.
- Support installation, upgrades, and planning for database and software infrastructure.
- Participate in validation, configuration management, and systems analysis reviews.
- Travel to SRS once per quarter to meet with engineering teams (estimated travel budget: $6,000/year).
- Bachelor’s degree in IT-related field + 5 years of relevant experience
OR - Non-IT Bachelor’s + 7 years relevant experience
OR - Associate’s degree in IT + 7 years relevant experience
OR - Non-IT Associate’s + 9 years relevant experience
OR - High school diploma with at least 11 years equivalent knowledge/experience
AND- At least 15 years of software engineering experience, including 10 years on DOE-related projects.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and support moderately complex software solutions.
- Working knowledge of standard software engineering practices and database infrastructure.
- Strong troubleshooting, debugging, and configuration management skills.
- Able to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience developing Rational DOORS Requirements Management Extensions.
- Prior SRS experience and familiarity with SRNS procedures.
- Active DOE L or Q clearance within the past 2 years (preferred).
- Ongoing professional development in software engineering principles and practices.
- Strong applied understanding of software development fundamentals, including secure code and system administration practices.
- Demonstrated success in technical leadership roles and project coordination.
