We are seeking skilled and reliable Shuttering Carpenters to construct, erect, dismantle, and maintain temporary wooden or metal structures (formwork) used to hold concrete during the curing process. The role demands precision, knowledge of construction materials, and a commitment to safety and structural integrity.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpreting Plans: Read and accurately interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine the exact size, dimensions, and type of formwork required for columns, beams, slabs, foundations, and walls.
- Measuring and Marking: Measure, cut, and shape wood, plywood, or metal components according to layout plans using hand tools (saws, hammers, drills) and power tools.
- Assembly and Erection: Assemble the formwork (shuttering) components on-site, ensuring proper alignment, bracing, and leveling. Secure the formwork to maintain stability and prevent concrete leakage during pouring.
- Stripping: Safely dismantle (strip) the formwork once the concrete has cured sufficiently, taking care to minimize damage to both the formwork panels and the cured concrete structure.
- Maintenance and Repair: Maintain and repair formwork panels, ensuring they are clean, oiled (or treated with release agent), and stored correctly for reuse.
- Safety and Standards: Ensure all formwork construction adheres strictly to local building codes, structural engineering requirements, and all site safety procedures, especially when working at heights or handling heavy loads.
- Support Work: Install embedded items (like sleeves, anchor bolts, or electrical conduit) within the formwork as required by the design.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Experience: [Specify required experience, e.g., Minimum 3 years] of documented experience as a Shuttering Carpenter or Formwork Fitter on large-scale construction sites.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of different types of formwork systems (e.g., conventional timber, modular systems, proprietary systems) and their load-bearing properties.
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and translate detailed architectural and structural drawings into physical forms.
- Tool Proficiency: Skilled in the safe and accurate use of carpentry tools and equipment.
- Physical Fitness: Excellent physical stamina, including the ability to lift heavy materials, climb, stand for long periods, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Safety Awareness: Solid knowledge of construction site safety regulations, including working platforms and scaffolding.
