Residential Services Professional position is available at The SD School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. This part-time position includes weeknight shifts (Monday-Friday, between the hours of 3:00 PM to midnight), as well as various weekend and potential overnight hours. Preference given to those with RN or LPN credentials. Salary is dependent on experience.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Supervise students who are blind/visually impaired and students with multiple disabilities in a residential setting during off-school hours, including meals and on weekends.
- Assist students with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as hygiene, organization, and personal care.
- Promote a safe, structured, and supportive living environment.
- Supervise and transport students to after-school and weekend activities, as needed.
Prepare and/or assist with the preparation of meals.
- Support and manage student behavior using positive, consistent strategies.
- Maintain accurate residential documentation and daily logs.
- Communicate effectively with residential, educational, and administrative staff.
- Serve as a positive role model for students.
- Maintain appropriate structure, boundaries, and discipline in accordance with school policies.
- Demonstrate flexibility, initiative, professionalism, and enthusiasm in all aspects of the role.
- Support students in developing independence and social skills.
- Follow all safety procedures, including emergency and health protocols.
- Participate in required training (CPI, medications, etc.)
Ability to:
- Communicate both orally and in writing.
- Always maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
- Safely assist with lifting and/or transporting students with physical needs (with or without accommodations)
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized working environment.
- Work effectively and collaboratively with co-workers and students
- Maintain appropriate structure, boundaries, and discipline.
- Follow written and verbal directions accurately
- Adapt to changing schedules and student needs
Incumbent will be required to undergo a background investigation before employment begins. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment.
Incumbent will be required to provide documentation of MMR vaccination.

Department Description and Cultural Expectations
The South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (SDSBVI) has been designated by state law to provide a variety of services to meet the individual needs of students in South Dakota who are visually impaired, blind, or deaf-blind. As a part of the state’s educational system, the school does not charge for tuition, room, and board or fees for any services provided by the school or staff, including educational assessments. The mission of the SDSBVI is to educate children who are blind, visually impaired, or deaf-blind. This is done through programs available on the campus in Aberdeen and through outreach consultant services state-wide. The SDSBVI offers a regular K-12 curriculum as well as emphasis on the Expanded Core Curriculum of Blindness, Braille, Orientation and Mobility, Social Skills, Communication, Daily Living Skills, Adaptive Technology, Sensory Efficiency, Self-Advocacy, and Vocational Preparation.
