As the Supervisor, you will report to the Director of the Student and Family Team and be a part of the Student and Family Services Division (SFSD) leadership team.
The Supervisor of Attendance and Sense of Belonging will be part of the Student & Family Services Division. This position will be tasked with leading the district attendance program per California Education Code 48240 in support of SFUSD’s guardrail of supporting the whole child. Setting the vision and strategy for Improving Student Attendance and Student Sense of Belonging through coherent systems for training, technology platform use, data reporting. This position will coordinate leadership from various divisions within SFUSD, as well as outside organizations, to develop, manage and implement a comprehensive attendance strategy aligned with state and district policies. They will work closely with other divisional leaders to ensure that students and families are centered in these processes, and they understand their rights and responsibilities. The Supervisor will oversee documentation and data management and complete all reporting responsibilities. The Supervisor will help lead cross divisional work whenever necessary.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Supervisor of Attendance and Sense of Belonging will be responsible for supporting SFUSD’s guardrail of supporting the whole child, including attendance and sense of belonging. The Supervisor will develop a comprehensive district wide strategy to manage the district’s attendance and sense of belonging initiatives.
This includes but is not limited to:
Use a district-wide lens to articulate the Vision, Values, Goals and Guardrails (VVGGs) of SFUSD and align programs to support priorities related to increasing sense of belonging and attendance. Develop and promote strategy around SFUSD attendance practices and strategies in alignment with VVGG- Develop and implement processes and tools to support cross-functional work
- Identifies organizational trends and patterns to understand implications of own work on the broader organization; articulates how one’s role and work is connected to SFUSD’s mission
- Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement encouraging experimentation, collaboration, and a growth mindset among district stakeholders.
- Develops work plans with clear and measurable goals for self and team members for cross-functional projects that require advanced knowledge of a specific professional discipline or operational area
- Use data to progress monitor impact of strategies at the district and school levels with data. Make this data easily accessible to both staff, families, and students
- Communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences, including district leaders, teachers, staff, students, families and external stakeholders. This may include presenting information clearly and concisely, developing communication plans, and leveraging multiple channels to reach diverse audiences.
- Holds oneself accountable (and others, if applicable) for on-time, high-quality deliverables, under general direction from leadership
- Proactively lead in the Student and Family Services Division, elevating bright spots and gaps in service of Guardrail 2, Serving the Whole Child.
- Develop a cross departmental collaborative teams to support goals of attendance initiatives
- Delegate tasks & direct team members to the tools and resources needed to meet individual goals
- Facilitate large groups of people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and points of view and demonstrate the ability to address access and equity issues with a variety of stakeholders
- Coordinate, guide and monitor the work of the Attendance Working Group and subject matter expert groups
- Build working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish tasks related to complex operational or production oriented projects within a specific function
- Create structures to actively engage in collaboration with other managers, directors and executive directors (1-1 meetings, departmental meetings) to expand on efficiency and impact of cross-functional work
- Navigate the political landscape to ensure citywide decisions are in the best interest of students and families
- Participate in leadership meetings across the district to focus goals on student’s access to education
- Collaborate across departments within SFUSD to ensure shared ownership of decisions, implementation and outcomes
- Design and implement targeted communication, outreach, and information sessions to actively participate in all citywide discussions that impact the students and families in San Francisco
- Lead complex work requiring advanced knowledge of a specific professional discipline or operational area
- Select, train, supervise and evaluate administrative, certificated and classified employees
- Leads one or more components/functions of work within the department/division
- Manages direct reports who may in turn manage others
- Manage and oversee attendance operations to ensure all schools have access to a Truancy Letter System, technical assistance in establishing and maintaining attendance procedures and policies that are compliant with CA Education Code, Board of Education Policies and reflect best practices
- Manage district attendance initiatives by coordinating with CBO’s, other district departments, school sites, and city agencies so that attendance strategies are aligned and coherent
- Design and deliver ongoing training and professional development to clerks, paraprofessionals, site leaders, and other district staff/departments to support the attendance and sense of belonging guardrail
- Lead SFSD’s Coordinated Care Team (CCT) Approach to ensure that school CCTs have essential tools, strategies and resources to implement effective CCT plans
- Partner with Central Support for Truancy Manager to work with school sites to support students and families with attendance challenges. Possible services will be site consultation, connection to district-level resources and interventions, and short-term case management to support students.
- Oversee and facilitate the use of data and data strategies towards continuous improvement
- Oversee audit/reporting responsibilities
- Makes autonomous decisions related to scope and direction (e.g. resource allocation, staffing, etc.) in addition to design and execution
- Sets the direction for a function and supports departmental management
- Other leadership responsibilities within classification as assigned by the executive team
The strongest candidates will have:
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey information effectively to individuals at various organizational levels- Ability to work with a wide range of partners, including SFUSD school and central office leaders, personnel from city agencies, and community based organizations
- Knowledge of program development/organizational change
- Strategic planning and management skills, including budget preparation and monitoring
- Proficiency in Google Suite and data analysis software; knowledge of evaluation theory and methodologies; strong technical, grammatical and analytical skills.
- Strong facilitation and presentation skills
- Ability to prioritize time sensitive assignments based on complexity and deadlines
- Experience with project management
- Bilingual/Biliterate
- Five (5) years of experience working in/with schools serving students historically underserved
- Experience coaching and designing/facilitating professional development opportunities
- Understanding of educational issues as they relate to educational opportunities for marginalized student populations
- Demonstrated ability to work in collaborative teams that include students, parents/families and professionals
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s License
- Technologically literate, with experience working with Student Information Systems including Synergy
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid California Administrative Services Credential or eligibility for a California Administrative Services Credential
- 1 year of administrative experience as a Central Office Administrator or Site Leader
