Teacher - Early Childhood Special Education

TEACHER - EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION

SUMMARY: Provides early childhood special education programming, employing a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to to meet the individualized learning needs of preschool children to ensure kindergarten readiness. Responsible for maximizing the learning experience of students with IEPs, planning instruction and/or adaptation of the education program to enable students to benefit from educational experiences, including academics, interpersonal/social skills, and daily living activities through the support of district-wide curriculum.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Demonstrate a strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice in all practices.
• Plan and deliver specially designed instruction aligned with IEP goals and district/school objectives.
• Create and maintain a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive.
• Develop, implement, and monitor Positive Behavior Support Plans; support and assist with Functional Behavioral Assessments.
• Supervise students at all times, including during outdoor activities in various weather conditions.
• Maintain student records, including IEP documentation, progress monitoring, and Medicaid billing for case management services.
• Collaborate with classroom staff, support staff, ancillary providers, and families to implement inclusive practices and interventions.
• Schedule, supervise, and support paraeducators across instructional settings.
• Facilitate and participate in IEP meetings, student-level problem-solving meetings, and team planning sessions.
• Encourage and maintain open, effective communication with parents and serve as a liaison between home and school.
• Model and support staff in implementing accommodations, modifications, and behavior strategies.
• Collect, analyze, and utilize instructional and behavioral data to inform teaching and improve student outcomes.
• Participate in curriculum development, school improvement planning, and professional learning opportunities.
• Abide by district policies and demonstrate competencies outlined in Michigan Special Education Rules and Regulations.
• Apply current research and theory to instructional programs and continuously engage in professional reflection and growth.
• Possess and demonstrate strong skills in communication, organization, technology use, and teamwork.
• Complete CPI training and actively serve on the building crisis intervention team.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the building administrator.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
• Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate - Special Education Certification required with ZA, ZS, or ZN endorsement(s).
• Must be highly qualified as defined by the Michigan State Dept. of Education.
• Experience working with at-risk youth and familiar with trauma informed practices.
• High degree of technology skills.
• Willingness to learn the tenets of Multi-Tiered System of Support and Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (MTSS/PBIS).
• Desire to collaborate with peers and work as a team.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently walking and standing while performing the duties of this job. In addition, the employee may frequently bend or twist at the neck and back while performing the duties of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include peripheral vision and close vision such as to read typewritten material. The employee may occasionally lift up to 25 pounds such as student equipment and wheelchairs.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Wages, benefits, and work year as defined in the Teachers’ Master Agreement

SALARY: Commensurate with experience and background based upon the salary schedule in the AEA Master Agreement

LOCATION: North Ward Early Childhood Center
