Since 1991, TOR has had continuous open contracts to provide engineering and design services on an as-needed basis for Arizona Public Service Company, Salt River Project, Nevada Power Company, and NV Energy.

Job Description:

TOR Engineering is looking for an Electrical Substation Physical Designer to provide design services to support our transmission and distribution substation projects for both utility and commercial clients. The substations can typically vary from 4kV thru 500kV. This position is an intermediate to advanced level position open individuals with at least 3 years of general design experience. Mentorship and training will be provided to familiarize the selected candidate with substation design work.

Individual should have an eye for detail, have a good work ethic and be a team player. A mind for space planning is a plus. Familiarity with steel fabrication is a plus. Creativity is a must. Prior experience in product development or a field where you were involved from site/product brainstorming to fabrication/construction will help you succeed in our world.

Responsibilities Include:

Physical Design:

  • Assist with the coordination of the design of the Civil Engineering package with TOR subconsultants which includes topography, drive aisle access, entrance locations, land scaping, permits, etc.
  • Assist with the coordination of the design of the Structural Engineering package with TOR subconsultants which includes steel structures, buildings, foundations, etc.
  • Develop, under supervision of a physical design engineer, the substation below grade package that includes the substation ground grid, conduit and trenches, foundations, oil containment, etc.
  • Develop, under supervision of a physical design engineer, the substation above grade package that includes steel structures, bus work, equipment placement, grounding, conduit, lighting and receptacles, control enclosure, etc.
  • Develop, under supervision of a physical design engineer, detailed bill of material for the substation physicals documenting all major and minor items.
  • Perform site visits, take notes and measurements of field conditions to compare with existing substation drawings.
  • Communicate with TOR Engineers and attend meetings for design reviews and updates on the project with TOR clients.
  • Assist with the review and composition of equipment and construction specifications.

General Design:

  • Design of projects which adhere to National Electric Safety Code and meet the standards of client and TOR.

General Requirements:

  • Strong background in Mechanical Design is a must. At least 3 years of General Mechanical Design is required.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to communicate and work well within a design team and customers to ensure successful design of the entire project.
  • Knowledge of computer aided drafting (CAD) software is required.
  • Selected interviewees will be asked to bring examples/pictures/explanations of their prior experiences/projects/hobbies/jobs showing mechanical inclinations and may be asked to take a short test to measure these abilities.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $29.00 - $36.00 per hour
