Location: G&B / GGET Roastery, retail coffee shops

Classification: Full-time, salaried, exempt
Rate: $65,000 - $70,000/year

About the Team

The Training Manager will work under the direct supervision of our VP of Retail Operations to develop and implement our barista training program. They will also work closely with our VP of Product to develop beverage recipes for GGET and lead training for wholesale clients.

About the Job

The primary role of the Training Manager is to elevate the standard of experience for our team members and guests through high-quality training on the critical skills of baristadom: technical proficiency, hospitality, preparation and service standards, and product knowledge.

As about 80% of their job, the Training Manager will act as the primary barista skills trainer for all incoming team members during their onboarding period. They will develop training materials for onboarding, ongoing, and just-in-time training. Of the remaining twenty percent, they will participate in beverage R&D and recipe development (10%), wholesale account training and activations (5%), and occasional emergency shift coverage (5%).

Essential Duties

  • Perform onboarding trainings and evaluations across all GGET coffee shops
    • Performing onboarding training for all incoming FOH team members
    • Perform lab-based and in-shop barista skills training
    • Achieve two-week time to baseline proficiency on espresso machine operation, milk steaming and pouring, and coffee menu knowledge
    • Develop new training materials as necessary
  • Lead new beverage product rollouts and just-in-time trainings
    • Lead beverage recipe R&D process
    • Develop training courses for new products as well as other training materials (cheat sheets, recipe cards, etc.)
    • Develop training courses for new product launches
    • Develop materials for rotating training focuses
  • Provide training resources to wholesale clients
    • Adapt existing training materials for use with outside clients
    • Perform occasional on-site trainings with wholesale clients
    • Participate in occasional activations and events

Other Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a complete understanding of G&B/Go Get Em Tiger mission and values
  • Foster a strong, team-first atmosphere for all employees
  • Enforce the company’s unequivocal quality standards with regards to customer service, hospitality, and beverage preparation
  • Take immediate action to remedy critical equipment and facilities issues as they arise during shop visits
  • Occasionally perform QC duties, as assigned by the VP of Retail Operations
  • Work with Regional Manager to drive accountability towards timely corrective actions that are identified through the QC reports
  • Serve as a responsive resource for any staff queries related to the coffee program
  • Offer support and mentorship to team members who seek to expand their coffee and service-related knowledge and skills
  • Providing wholesale partners with the necessary knowledge and tools for our product, including but not limited to hosting trainings with wholesale team members
  • Perform occasional espresso machine maintenance
  • Occasionally cover barista shifts in emergency situations
  • Other duties as assigned by the VP of Retail Operations

Qualifications & Experience

  • Previous, proven experience as a trainer in the specialty coffee industry
  • 4+ years experience working in a role where you directly trained or led others
  • Experience developing and continually updating training programs, preferably for retail operations
  • Understanding and ability to execute all necessary coffeebar functions at a high level
  • Awareness of the coffee landscape of Los Angeles and beyond

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Must be able to provide reliable transportation to/from work and for work-related errands
    • Must maintain valid driver’s license
    • Must maintain mandated minimum personal auto coverage
  • Firm understanding of Go Get Em Tiger mission, values, and standards
  • A willingness to act as the standard-bearer for said mission, values, and standards
  • Ability to research emerging trends within the coffee industry and within the field of employee development
  • Ability to recognize when things can be improved and drive to act immediately to improve them
  • High level of organization with excellent time management skills and ability to self-direct
  • Ability to gain total proficiency with Company LMS, Opus
  • Ability to keep a calm, mature, professional demeanor at all times
  • Ability to communicate directives to staff with varying levels of experience
  • Superior leadership capabilities; ability to work well within groups
  • A keen and meticulous eye for detail
  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays as tasks arise
  • Must be proficient with Google Suite, Slack and Microsoft Office and be ready to learn R365, Square POS, and all other software related to the function of our retail coffee shops.
