ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT


The Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is responsible for the organization and coordination of the work of the Telecommunication Development Sector of the Union. BDT deals mainly with development policies, strategies, programming, projects, as well as technical cooperation activities to enable and foster universal access to affordable, high-quality and secure telecommunications/ICTs and Foster equitable and inclusive use of telecommunications/ICTs to empower people and societies for sustainable development. To effectively and efficiently serve the needs of Member States, BDT is organized into four functional areas:


  • Operations Coordination Department (Office of the Deputy to the Director) (DDR)
  • Projects, Partnerships & Digital Skills Department (PPS)
  • Digital Networks & Environment Department (DNE)
  • Digital Knowledge Society Department (DKS)

The regional offices provide assistance to the ITU Member States of the Region, ensuring a close relationship and collaboration. To implement the agreed programs and projects, in accordance with the ITU Strategy Plan and the BDT Action Plan, with the active support of all Departments, providing timely information about their development. To provide proper line management and support, the Regional Directors report to the Director of the BDT.

TERMS OF REFERENCE

Under the guidance of the ITU’s Regional Director for Arab States and under the supervision of the Programme Officer (Programme, Projects & Initiatives), and in close collaboration with regional coordinators, the intern will:
  • Collect, clean, and organize project, event, and country profile data from multiple internal and external sources.
  • Design and develop interactive dashboards (e.g., using Excel, Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools) for the regional projects, events and countries profiles to visualize KPIs, timelines, and resource utilization.
  • Assist with the automation of repetitive reporting tasks, including preparation of status updates and visual progress summaries.
  • Support the creation of data pipelines and templates for regular project monitoring and event tracking.
  • Assist in integrating country-level data (e.g., regulatory, digital transformation, disaster preparedness indicators) into ITU’s regional country profile dashboards.
  • Generate analytical insights and visual storytelling to support presentations, donor reports, and decision-making.
  • Document procedures and develop user guides for dashboard maintenance and updates.

  • Demonstrated experience with data analytics, visualization, and dashboard tools (e.g., Excel, Excel advanced functions, Power BI, Tableau and Google Data Studio).
  • Knowledge of database management, data cleaning, and automation techniques is desirable.
  • Familiarity with project management dashboards or KPI monitoring is an advantage.

QUALIFICATION REQUIRED

Education: University degree (or final year of study) in data science, computer science, statistics, information systems, engineering, or a related field. Formal training or coursework in data visualization, analytics, or business intelligence tools is an asset.

Experience: No work experience required.

Languages: Advanced level of English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is an asset.

ITU Internship Requirements

To be eligible for an internship at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), candidates must:
  • Be under 30 years of age (Exceptions may be considered for candidates pursuing a Ph.D.).
  • Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate programme, or be a recent graduate (within six months prior to the start of the internship).
  • Be a citizen of a Member State of ITU.

Please note that a non-remunerated Internship position at ITU does not carry the same conditions of employment as a Short-term or a Fixed-term position. Mandatory Medical Insurance, travel expenses, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or sponsoring institutions.
