This position is responsible for performing sample collection and monitoring water quality in the water distribution system. Assists with the chemical, physical, and biological analysis of water and by-products of water treatment processes. Performs a variety of semi-skilled water sampling, testing, and process control tasks to ensure compliance with water quality regulations. Supports water distribution and production by obtaining required water quality data and works to identify and rectify any water quality issues. Investigates, diagnoses, and tracks customer concerns.
Major Duties
Collects samples for analysis at the Water Treatment Facility.
Performs field analysis of water samples.
Responds to water quality concerns; Phone/in-person conversations, sample collection & analysis, creating reports & discussions of water quality.
Maintains, repairs, calibrates, and tests equipment.
Assist with the maintenance, repair, and calibration of the Water Treatment Facility's continuous monitoring equipment.
Assist with maintenance, repair, and calibration of Water System monitoring/sampling stations.
Assist with the maintenance of the Water Treatment Plant grounds and facilities.
Assist staff with unscheduled sampling/studies as necessary.
Assist with GPS locating collection sites.
Performs system flushing for routine maintenance and water age issues.
Assists with chemical analysis of source and finished water samples to determine the best applicable treatment options for maintaining compliance.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Qualifications
Knowledge and level of competency are commonly associated with the completion of an associate’s degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
Possession of or the ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Possession of or the ability to readily obtain state certification as appropriate.
Knowledge of water treatment plant specifications, equipment, and operating procedures.
Knowledge of the principles of sampling and analysis.
Knowledge of the principles of organic and inorganic chemistry, including quantitative and qualitative analysis.
Knowledge of chemical, physical, and bacteriological analyses of water.
Knowledge of modern laboratory equipment (type, maintenance, operation, and calibration).
Knowledge of the equipment used in field testing of water (type, maintenance, operation, and calibration).
Knowledge of GPS and geographic information systems.
Knowledge of city and departmental policies and procedures.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and regulations related to water treatment and analyses.
