Dr. Ryan obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Energy Engineering from the Division of Energy and Environment Technology at KIST under the Korea University of Science and Technology (UST) in August 2021. Prior Ph.D. period, he graduated Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) from the Theoretical/Computational Condensed Matter Physics Group at the Department of Physics, Universitas Indonesia (UI), Indonesia, in July 2013 with a concentration in Condensed Matter Physics. He graduated Ph.D. with the honor of the “President Award”, the highest award for the “Best Graduate” of all graduates from 32 national research institutes in South Korea. He was also nominated as a finalist (big 3) of the ASEAN-South Korea Award for Excellence in Science, Technology, and Innovation Pioneer 2021 by The Government of South Korea, supporting Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI). This award is intended for researchers from ASEAN countries in South Korea, including students, postdocs, and professors. His research expertise spans the two following core areas: (1) device and material design to enhance the performance of energy storage (e.g., batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells) and harvesting/conversion (e.g., solar cells & water splitting) devices by improving the inter-grain particle and inter-layer interface properties of their electrode and/or active materials using advanced interface engineering strategies. (2) in-depth study of material properties, including electronic, physical, magnetic, and photonic properties, of semiconductor material using device and material physics. He demonstrates considerable research and technical experience on the surface coating task of the anode (Li- and Zn- metals and Sn-based), cathode (sulfur, NMC811, and LCO), surface and material characterizations (e.g., XRD, XPS, SEM, and TEM), electrochemical testing (e.g., galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, EIS, etc.), contribution to 18 research projects, publication in scientific journals with 17 papers and 10 patents, presentation at scientific meetings in Korea and USA, and supervision of Master and Doctoral students.
