Guardian Industries is looking for a Float SME to join the AMEIA Float OpEx/ Opex team.

This role serves as a catalyst and enabler to introduce and implement the best knowledge at the sites. To achieve reliable, predictive, and safe operations throughout the region, it requires excellent collaboration skills and the deliberate application of best practices to enhance functional effectiveness.

This is for a regional role for supporting AMEIA plants (Asia, Middle East, Africa and India). The candidate would preferably to be based on one of these plants.

You will be working with a group of 3 - 4 members who will support the float operations mainly in the AMEIA region.

Willing and able to travel internationally 30% - 40% of the time

What You Will Do

A Float SME (Subject Matter Expert) for Tin bath, Lehr & Cutting in the glass manufacturing industry is responsible for ensuring the efficient operation, maintenance, and optimization of the tin bath, lehr and cutting process in a float glass production line. They support the plants in the following, but not limited to:

  • Process Optimization & Control
  • Monitoring and optimizing tin bath, lehr and cutting operations to maintain glass quality and efficiency.
  • Controlling temperature, atmosphere, and tin bath chemistry to ensure defect-free glass.
  • Ensuring the correct operation of heating, cooling, and protective gas systems (e.g., nitrogen-hydrogen atmosphere).
  • Optimizing the annealing process in lehr for good control of stress in the glass and cutting, in various thickness
  • Quality Assurance & Defect Prevention
  • Identifying and troubleshooting defects such as bubbles, striations, or tin pickup.
  • Collaborating with quality control teams to ensure glass meets specifications.
  • Implementing process improvements to reduce waste and increase yield.
  • Ensuring good cutting quality
  • Equipment Maintenance & Reliability
  • Overseeing maintenance of tin bath components like top rollers, dross box, and bath seals.
  • Ensuring the integrity of bath linings and preventing contamination.
  • Coordinating planned and unplanned maintenance activities.
  • Safety & Environmental Compliance
  • Enforcing safety protocols for handling molten tin, hazardous gases and handling glass in lehr
  • Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations related to tin waste and emissions.
  • Conducting risk assessments and implementing safety improvements.
  • Training & Technical Support
  • Training operators and technicians on best practices for tin bath, lehr and cutting operations.
  • Providing troubleshooting guidance and technical expertise for production teams.
  • Documenting SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for tin bath, lehr and cutting operations.
  • Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
  • Working closely with upstream (melting) and downstream (annealing, cutting) teams to ensure smooth production.
  • Implementing lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies to improve efficiency.
  • Participating in R&D projects for process innovations.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Knowledge/Background in Materials, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering, or in Materials / Ceramic Science with work experience in float glass or other glass manufacturing industry
  • Float glass process knowledge and experience in full scale manufacturing and development using production scale equipment
  • Experience and understanding of flat glass forming (float technology), glass annealing and cutting.

  • Experience with project management to include executing projects that require multi-functional involvement form implementation.
  • Lean/Six Sigma experience
